The uses of nuclear fuels to generate electrical power, to make isotopes for peaceful purposes, and to make explosives are well known. The estimated world-wide capacity of the 429 nuclear power reactors in operation in January 1990 amounted to about 311,000 megawatts. 

Alfred Nobel died in San Remo, Italy in 1896, and his will established the Prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature and the Peace Prize. They were first given in 1901 and now... 

Linus Pauling (1901-1994) was born in Portland Ore gon and was educated at Oregon State University and at the California Institute of Technology where he earned a Ph D in chemistry in 1925 In addition to re search in bonding theory Pauling studied the structure of proteins and was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for that work in 1954 Paul ing won a second Nobel Prize (the Peace Prize) in 1962 for his efforts to limit the testing of nuclear weapons He was one of only four scientists to have won two Nobel Prizes The first double winner was a woman Can you name her" ...

Despite the fact that refined cane and beet sugar are physically and compositionaHy identical, the histories of their development are very different. The story of both sugars, cane and beet, is woven into historic tales of adventure and discovery. In trade and commerce, today as in the past both industries play major roles. In the Hterature there are many records of the fascinating role of sugar in the destinies of nations in war and peace (3). 

The Athabasca deposit, along with the neighboring Wabasca, Peace River, and Cold Lake heavy oil deposits, have together been estimated to contain 1.86 X 10 m (>1.17 X 10 bbl) of bitumen. The Vene2uelan deposits may at least contain >1.60 X 10 m (1.0 X 10 bbl) bitumen (2). Deposits of tar sand, each containing >3 x 10 m (20 x 10 bbl) of bitumen, have also been located in the United States, Albania, Italy, Madagascar,...

Ease of access for institutions from nonmember countries also makes COST a successful tool for tackling topics of a truly global nature.
