Culture of Peace

Just war theory has been subject to strong criticism. For example, the theory may be viewed as institutionalising conflict assumptions, as it assumes a culture of conflict rather than seeking to promote a culture of peace. The very concept of a just war may be doubted, for armed conflict inevitably results in the death and injury of the innocent. The requirements represent a rather idealised state very different from the irrational political disputes that precede the start of wars and the chaotic conduct of wars. It has also been suggested that the very existence of a set of requirements of this sort makes war more likely, for they can be used speciously to justify war. For example, the doctrine may be used to provide justiflcation for pre-emptive war or even preventive war, where any danger is distant, perhaps no... [Pg.39]

A further very pertinent insight of the Rule, implicit rather than explicit, is what may be termed Benedictine Peace . Importantly, Benedictine Peace does not involve a grand programme of action, but rather concerns each person seeking to create peace in his or her immediate community, a culture of peace arising from personal inner peace The Benedictine ideal of the human being is not that of one... [Pg.98]

Creating a Culture of Peace People in the health and environment sectors can do mnch to promote a culture of peace, in which nonviolent means are utilized to settle conflicts. A cnltnre of peace is based on the valnes, attitudes, and behaviors that form the deep roots of peace. They are in some ways the opposite of the values, attitudes, and behaviors that reflect and inspire war and violence, but should not be equated with just the absence of war. A culture of peace can exist at the level of the family, workplace, school, and community as weU as at the level of the state and in international relations. Health and environment professionals and others can play important roles in encouraging the development of a culture of peace at all these levels. [Pg.35]

The mission of the Earth Charter is to establish a sound ethical foundation for the emerging global society and to help build a sustainable world based on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. [Pg.235]

Today, I am an author, money and marketing coach, and a highly creative entrepreneur. My business life has taken zig-zag turns, gut-wrenching deviations, and some serious nose-dives—oh, yes, and it has had the odd moments of peace and contentment. But it was that way for a reason. My organic business has led me here, to this point where I am now helping others to be entrepreneurs who respect their inherent nature, their environment, and their values, because the ripple effect of such a shift will be businesses that respect individuals, cultures, the environment, and the basic values of humanity in general. [Pg.15]

The Convention takes as its starting point the principle that the preservation of the cultural heritage is not solely a matter for the State in whose territory it is located but is a matter of international concern. The loss of cultural heritage, wherever situated, is a loss suffered by humanity as a whole. Its protection must therefore be assured by both national and international measures that operate both in times of peace and conflict. [Pg.195]

The church, at its highest levels, has made the protection of indigenous peoples, and their cultures, a high priority (Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, 2004). In both Guatemala, and the Philippines, the church has objected to mining because of the threat it poses to the cultures of the indigenous inhabitants of both countries. [Pg.399]

From early cave dwellings to the well-appointed suburban homes of today, the most fundamental reason for shelter remains to provide protection from weather and other possible dangers. Beyond this most basic purpose, modern culture has forged a number of other expectations for homes, including affordability, comfort, health, durability, and peace of mind. This article explains the concepts behind energy-efficient homes—how they meet our basic needs... [Pg.203]

Some of the more popular countries for U.S. retirees are Mexico, Canada, the Philippines, and Costa Rica. By far, the nation with the largest population of U.S. retirees is Mexico. More than 1,000,000 live there, attracted by its low cost of living. Canada attracts U.S. retirees with its natural beauty, more sedate lifestyle, and cosmopolitan cities. The Philippines is popular with retired military personnel, who have experience with the area and with Philippine-Americans. Its main attractions are beautiful geography, lush tropical settings, and a rich cultural past. Costa Rica is a free and stable democracy that enjoys peace. (It is one of the few nations in the world without an army, and has the highest literacy rate in the Western world.) It is a beautiful country with moderate temperatures, and there is no tax on pensions or other income from abroad. [Pg.277]
