Missing Peace

The film screened in competition at Slamdance on January 23, 2003, a few weeks shy of the first anniversary of Betancourt s kidnapping. The title was Missing Peace. When and why was it changed ...

Before I went on medication, all I wanted was to be able to go out with my friends and go to a bar and be able to sit there and spend the time, because before I would be scared to get on the train. I would be fearful of going out, and once I was there I would have to leave after a short while. And now I can. I can go out and I have a life and I enjoy it. But sometimes I feel I really, really, miss that spiritual side of me. And it was becoming a major part of my identity and who I was, and how it was going to shape my life and how I was going to live my life, (male peace activist, aged 22)... 

Charles D. Coryell, 1912-. Professoi of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Consultant to the Brookhaven and Oak Ridge National Laboratories of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The studies of J. A. Marinsky and L. E. Glendenin in his group led to the chemical identification of the missing element 61, which in 1949 was officially named promethium. Dr. Coryell participates actively in the scientific efforts of the Federation of American Scientists and of the United World Federalists toward peace and world stability. 

Bob studies her for a second and realizes he is fascinated by her every gesture, her way of speaking, and her smile and the way it crinkles her triple nostril nose. Bob wants to learn more about her culture and what her people are like. Obviously there is a vast chasm that separates Bob and Miss Muxdroozol. Could he ever truly have a deep friendship with someone who had never read, perhaps never even heard of, War and Peace, the Bible, or Cryptonomicon She probably knew nothing about gourmet cooking, never traveled the Earth, never camped in a secluded New England pine forest. Great cultural cliffs separate creatures from different worlds. 

Miss Muxdroozol is quiet for a few seconds. Then she pulls Bob to her and kisses one of his faces. They continue walking in a peaceful silence. 

The only item in all the room that I would miss, I decided, was my mother s ribbon. Only that. I stroked it gently and then hooked it carefully round my neck so I could take it with me. I thought of her peaceful plot in the shady churchyard. Perhaps I would be allowed to lie with her. Surely Shales would take pity on me to that extent. 

After Hving more than 20 years in Curasao, my husband and I moved to Miami. We miss our island lifestyle, our friends, our peace. Now, I ve discovered your magazine. I love it There s something magical about this area that s more than the beaches and the sunsets. There s a way of life, a cosmopolitan feel to it that few people understand. I m glad your magazine is around to show everyone the real Caribbean.
