The concentration data obtained from each sample analysis were expressed as fractional parts and normalized to sum to 100. The normalized data were statistically analyzed, and three principal components (A=3, Equation [1]) were calculated. The PCB constituents (varlbles) are numbered sequentially and correspond to peak 1, peak 2,. .. to peak 105. Estimation of pv for PCBs Burkhard et al. [8] compared the predictive capability of 11 different methods to estimate pvap for PCBs at 25°C. The comparison includes solely structure-based methods and methods that require the input of Tm, Th, and the entropy of fusion, ASfUS, or a gas-liquid chromatographic retention index.

The concerns aroused by methylmercury in fish, arising from the susceptibility of the developing brain to this neurotoxicant, led to the design and execution of two large prospective studies. One was located in the Seychelle islands, which lie in the Indian Ocean. The other was located in the Faroe Islands, which lie in the North Sea. Both communities consume large quantities of seafood. In the Seychelles, it is almost exclusively in the form of fish. In the Faroes, virtually all the methylmercury comes from the consumption of pilot whales, which are also contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Both studies assayed maternal exposures to methylmercury. In the Seychelles, maternal hair was used as the index it reflects the history of blood levels. The Faroes study relied primarily on cord blood. 

Contaminated Fish Consumption. Serum cholesterol, serum GGT, and blood pressure, but not serum HDL cholesterol or triglycerides, were positively correlated with serum PCB levels in 458 residents of Triana, Alabama (Kreiss et al. 1981). These associations were independent of age, sex, fish consumption, body mass index, and alcohol consumption. Consumption of contaminated fish was the only known source of PCB exposure, but PCB intake was not estimated. DDT was also increased in the serum of the people and in the fish, and serum DDT and serum PCB levels were highly correlated. 

Linear regression analyses indicated that the psychomotor index scores declined with increasing prenatal PCB exposure at both 6 and 12 months. At 6 months, the PDI was estimated to decrease 0.96 points for every increase of 1 ppm in PCBs. This would mean a drop of 2.6 points if a child moved from the 5th to the 95th percentile of PCB exposure. At 12 months, the drop was estimated at 1.34 points/ppm. Neither the 6-month nor the 12-month mental index scores were related to transplacental PCB exposure (Gladen et al. 1988). Similar analyses were run to examine postnatal exposure in breast-fed children. Postnatal exposure to PCBs was not associated with the PDI or MDI scores at either time period.
