Concentration of transferrin in CSF does not correlate with serum levels. This suggests consideration of the presence of a speciflc transport system for transferrin in the blood-CSF barrier. This transport system may be similar to that, for instance, for immunoglobulins (transcytosis). Only as an epiphenomenon is there a signiflcant decrease of serum concentrations of transferrin, as in cases of ulcerous meningitis and malignant meningeal inflltration. In this case other methods are required to determine the levels with any degree of precision (A24, Zl). 

Although statistical comparisons were not performed on data other than the catecholamine levels, it was found that adrenaline levels were consistently higher 60-240 min after the 600-mg dose relative to placebo, and higher 60-150 min after the 600-mg dose relative to the 150-mg dose. Sleep latencies, sleepiness scores, and reaction times correlated with serum caffeine levels in the predicted direction, showing that caffeine improved alertness in a dose-dependent fashion. 

In spite of the strong evidence just cited, lupus nephritis is not invariably correlated with serum anti-dsDNA. (NZB x NZWjFi x NZW backcross mice may develop nephritis without anti-DNA antibodies (Y5). Patients with lupus nephritis also do not always have anti-dsDNA antibodies or have only low levels of antibodies (A23, H7, L21). Swaak et al. noted a sharp drop at the time of flareup of anti-dsDNA antibodies accompanied by low levels of Clq and C3 in patients with severe SLE flares (S36).

Since the adverse effects of clozapine may be more common in children than adults, perhaps reflecting developmental pharmacokinetic differences, clozapine and its metabolites, norclozapine and clozapine-N-oxide, have been studied in six youths aged 9-16 years, with childhood onset schizophrenia (222). Dose-normalized concentrations of clozapine did not vary with age and were similar to reported adult values. Clinical improvement in five patients correlated with serum clozapine concentrations, and clinical response and total number of common adverse effects (sialorrhea, n = 5 tachycardia, n = 4 sedation, n = 1 enuresis, n = 1) correlated with norclozapine concentrations. One child had a reduced neutrophil count (1.1 x 109/1) and another child had increased hepatic transaminases. 

Increases in serum creatinine concentrations, correlated with serum amiodarone concentrations, have been reported (185).

The plasma concentration of AVP in healthy adults (ages 24 to 42 years) with normal water intake and normal physical activity is 0.35 to 11.94ng/L (0.32 to 11.80pmoI/L). For best interpretation of results, plasma AVP values should be correlated with serum or plasma osmolahty ... 

Serum y-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and cholesterol (Section 3.2.2.6.2.2), but not serum ALT or bilirubin, were positively correlated with serum PCB levels in 458 residents of Triana, Alabama (Kreiss et al. 1981). These associations were independent of factors such as age and alcohol and fish consumption, although the natural partitioning of PCBs into serum lipids could contribute to the correlation. Consumption of contaminated fish was the only known source of PCB exposure. The mean serum concentration of PCBs (analyzed as Aroclor 1260) was 17.2 ppb. Levels of DDT were also increased in residents and fish, and there was a strong positive correlation between serum concentrations of DDT and PCB. Serum DDT levels did contribute to the variance in serum GGT and other effects, but this does not preclude the possibility of an interaction between PCB and DDT. 

At blood levels of from 0.06 to 0.20 mg selenium/L, Deguchi (1985) found selenium to be positively correlated with grasping power and blood pressure in normal men and women and with hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations in normal women. Similar correlations were not found in subjects with proteinuria or hypertension. In addition, Gebre-Medhin et al. (1988) found that in healthy children, serum selenium levels of 0.055-0.082 mg selenium/L were positively correlated with serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, low and very low density lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins. Similar correlations were not found in diabetic children, who have slightly elevated serum selenium levels.

Serum T4 was negatively correlated with serum SCN (r = —0.363, P < 0.05) and serum TSH was positively correlated with serum SCN (r = 0.354, P < 0.05). The findings suggest that occupational exposure to CN results in impaired thyroid gland function. Several investigators believe that the thyroid effects... 

Recent studies from the US reported that all urine samples obtained from 2820 US residents in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001—2002) contained perchlorate with a median value of 3.6 o,g/l (Blount et al., 2006a, b), and that in women, but not in men, with a urinary iodine <100 j,g/l, there was an inverse correlation of urine perchlorate with serum T4 values and a direct correlation with serum TSH values (Blount et al., 2006a, b). However, we have recently assessed urine perchlorate concentrations in 398 first-trimester pregnant women, residing in Wales and Italy, with a median value of 2.7 xg/l and low urine iodine values <100 j,g/l, and found no correlation between urine perchlorate and serum free T4 and TSH concentrations (Pearce et al., 2007a). Further studies are underway to obtain more information on this obviously important public health issue. 

Phenothiazines and related rigid compounds - The antihallucinatory effect of chlorpromazine correlates with serum levels of prolactin, 2 consistent with the DA hypothesis of schizophrenia. No regional site-specificity for limbic areas was found with thioridazine or with clozapine. An excellent correlation between daily clinical dose and the dose-dependent increase in cocaine self-administration in rats was found for seven typical and atypical neuroleptics. Clozapine, however, produced a dose-dependent decrease in cocaine intake. 

Intravenous administration in the dialysis center has been practical and effective for patients undergoing hemodialysis [51, 52], but impractical for patients without vascular access who are receiving peritoneal dialysis. Studies of subcutaneous administration showed lower but more sustained peak plasma EPO concentrations (Cmax) than occurred using the intravenous route. The efficacy of subcutaneous administration supports the concept of a sustained minimal effective EPO concentration. High Gnax values after intravenous administration appear unnecessary the dose response relationship seen with intravenous administration most likely correlates with serum EPO concentrations maintained above a minimal effective level.
