Paving preparation

I owe a lot to Federica Bertondn and Giovanni Boccaletti. During their stay as Erasmus students in Groningen they brought a little bit of Italy with them (I remember some very good meals). Also from a chemical point of view their stays were successful. The compounds prepared and purified by Federica are at the basis of the work described in this thesis. The work of Giovanni has paved the way to enantioselective Lewis-acid catalysis in water, which is perhaps the most significant result of this thesis. [Pg.193]

Highway Construction. The preparation and use of sulfur—asphalt (SA) paving materials have been reviewed (45,46). In the 1930s, asphalt (qv) was easily available and priced lower than sulfur. As of the 1990s, this is no longer the case. There are four different types of sulfur paving materials. [Pg.125]

Many other opportunities exist due to the enormous flexibility of the preparative method, and the ability to incorporate many different species. Very recently, a great deal of work has been published concerning methods of producing these materials with specific physical forms, such as spheres, discs and fibres. Ribosomes were discovered by electron micros-copists examining the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum using ultrathin sectioning techniques. Their presence in cells was established by 1956, and the name ribosome was proposed in 1957. At first it was difficult to study protein synthesis in vitro using isolated ribosomes.
