Pathogens control

Hygiene and Regulation Almost unique to MF is the influence of regulatoiy concerns in selec tion and implementation of a suitable microfilter. Since MF is heavily involved with industries regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, concerns about process stabihty, consistency of manufacture, virus reduc tion, pathogen control, and material safety loom far larger than is usually found in other membrane separations.

Based on these mechanisms a new frontier in the application of enzymes to biotechnology, including the development of synthetic enzymes (synzymes)82,83 will be exploited. Research on structure-function relationships between ribozymes and abzymes will lead to the development of a number of sequence specific catalysts, which will control expression of a specific gene or its products, and eventually to application as pathogen controls in agriculture and to clinical use. The nominal spray application rate, as kg active ingredient (a.i.) per hectare, does not define in any way the dose received by a target plant or organism, nor does it represent the actual distribution within the canopy or individual plant. This consideration does not apply to soil applications, but becomes important for weed control and even more so for pest or pathogen control [4,5]. Hence physical application and formulation factors need to be tailored to specific applications [6]. 

Streptomycin is also permitted in USA on tobacco for control of wild fire (P. syringae pv. tabad) and blue mold (Peronospora tabacina), which is the only fungal pathogen controlled by streptomycin [57]. 

Cyflufenamid, sold as the mixture product Pancho TF for specialty crops or as the solo product Cyflamid (Vegas ) for cereals, is a potent new powdery milde-wicide. It shows both preventative and curative ability and allows for excellent pathogen control with its new mode of action. 

Du Pont has recently launched proquinazid as the market products Talius and Talendo to control powdery mildew infections in the cereal and the grapevine sectors. With its new mode of action and its preventative ability, the active ingredient allows for excellent residual pathogen control.
