Particulates discussion, organic pollutants

As indicated above, industrial wastewater contains avast array of pollutants in soluble, colloidal, and particulate forms, both inorganic and organic. In addition, the required effluent standards are also diverse, varying with the industrial and pohutant class. Consequently, there can be no standard design for industrial water-pohution control. Rather, each site requires a customized design to achieve optimum performance. However, each of the many proven processes for industrial waste treatment is able to remove more than one type of pollutant and is in general applicable to more than one industry. As a first approach it is assumed that an industrial closed water loop focuses on the production of one type of process water of a constant water quality and temperature. After this process water has been polluted and has become a wastewater, it will be treated to the required quality and will be used again as process water. In fact this is the simplest form of a closed loop water system. We will discuss this situation first. The first step in the design of such a simple closed loop water system is to consider the type of separate treatment steps and the sequence of these treatment steps which have to be applied on a wastewater stream that contains large amounts of easily biodegradable soluble pollutants in addition to non-biodegradable soluble organic and inorganic pollutants and suspended and colloidal particulate... 

A number of components of ambient oxidant mixtures are discussed in Chapter 3. Further detailed characterization studies of ambient particulate pollution may suggest that some of these compounds are present in the organic fraction in quantities likely to be detrimental to human health. If so, further controlled health-effects studies would be indicated and might be accomplished with irradiated and diluted automobile exhaust or exposure to pure specific compounds. 

Air emissions testing data from five facilities were evaluated for this report. The results are summarized here, by pollutant. The most extensive testing was performed by WP L, who tested criteria pollutants, heavy metals, dioxins and furans, and other organic compounds. Table 6-2 summarizes test data for all criteria pollutants at WP L.18 Ohio Edison tested particulate, S02, NOx, and lead emissions results from this whole tire test are provided in Table 6-3.12 Illinois Power tested PM, metals, and S02 their emissions data are summarized in Table 6-4.4 In 1979, United Power Association performed two TDF tests at their Minnesota facility, and conducted air emissions tests during the first test burn for particulate, NOx, SOz, sulfuric acid, and chloride.17 These emission results are summarized in Table 6-5.17 Northern States Power tested TDF in their wood-fired utility boiler in 1982, without much success.9 Their emissions data are summarized in Table 6-6.9 Comparisons of the data from these plants are provided in the pollutant specific discussions that follow the Northern States Power data are not included with graphical summaries of the other four facilities, because its boiler is wood fired, while the other four co-fire the TDF with coal.
