Particle composition standards

For the investigation of the chemical composition of dispersed particles, e. g. in polymer latices, a rapid method of density gradient centrifugation is developed. The method yields in a few minutes the density distribution and by this the distribution of the chemical composition of the particles. The standard density gradient centrifugation needs for the same results because of the time-consuming equilibrium gradient formation more than 15 hours. [Pg.250]

When characterizing particulate matter of unknown composition, it is necessary to assume a value for the index of refraction to infer the diameter from a measured intensity ratio. This causes inherent uncertainties in any reported size distribution unless all particles are of a known and uniform composition. In the case of automobile exhaust particles, the composition is certainly unknown and would probably include some combination of carbon particles and lead halides condensed on nuclei. Figure 1 is indicative of expected variations from such a spread of particle compositions. In the range of low a, the characteristic curve for nonabsorbing particles oscillates around an average value which is approximately the n = 1.57 — 0.56i data. Thus the intensity ratio curve for the absorbing soot is a convenient one to assume as the calibration standard for automobile exhaust particulates. Although one must be aware of the potential problems posed by particle size effects in slurry and powder analysis, in many cases, the range of particle size and particle composition for a process stream is sufficiently constant that reliable measurements can be made using on-line XRF systems. Successful applications which have been reported include an on-stream XRF measuring system for ore slurry analysis [38] a system for direct XRF analysis of pulverised coal streams [39] and on-stream analysis of cement using XRF [2, 40]. When a liquid or solid substance is emitted to the air as particulate matter, its properties and effects may be changed. As a substance is broken up into smaller and smaller particles, more of its surface area is exposed to the air. Under these circumstances, the substance, whatever its chemical composition, tends to combine physically or chemically with other particles or gases in the atmosphere. The resulting combinations are frequently unpredictable. Very small aerosol particles (from 0.001 to 0.1 Im) can act as condensation nuclei to facilitate the condensation of water vapor, thus promoting the formation of fog and ground mist. Particles less than 2 or 3 [Lm in size (about half by weight of the particles suspended in urban air) can penetrate the mucous membrane and attract and convey harmful chemicals such as sulfur dioxide. In 2000, Sun and co-workers succeeded in synthesis of monodispersed Fe/Pt nanoparticles by the reduction of platinum acetylacetonate and decomposition of Fe(CO)5 in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine stabilizers [18]. The Fe/Pt nanoparticle composition is readily controlled, and the size is tunable from 3 to 10 nm in diameter with a standard deviation of less than 5%. For practical use, we developed the novel symthetic method of FePt nanoparticles by the polyol reduction of platinum acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)2) and iron acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)3) in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine stabilizers in di- -octylether [19,20]. The Fe contents in FePt nanoparticles can be tuned from 23 to 67atomic%, and the particle sizes are not significantly affected by the compositions, retaining to be 3.1 nm with a very narrow size distribution, as shown in Figure 6. [Pg.364]

For code R8 it commences with a solid with the help of AFNOR standards NF T 20-035 . Handling consists in preparing mixtures of variable compositions of an oxidant to be classified as cellulose. Both substances have to have a definite particle size distribution. The composition which gives the fastest combustion on a moulding of the mixture at a distance of 20 cm is established. This speed is compared with the one of the mixture used as a reference, which has an imposed composition of barium nitrate and cellulose. Another excipient used in feed additive premixes is a diluent used to dilute or standardize activity. Diluents are similar in composition to grain carriers, except the particle size is generally smaller. No attempt is made to absorb the active drug to the individual particles of the diluents. If a liquid is used it is mainly for dust control. A diluent is considered for use when the level of the active ingredient components in the premix approaches or exceeds 50% of the product or when two or more active components vary greatly from one another in density [13]. Examples of diluent materials are ground limestone, sodium sulfate, kaolin, corn cob flour, and ground oyster shells. [Pg.725]
