If the most-probable orientation of the structural entities is no longer parallel to the fiber axis, we may observe a clearly inclined streak. Such orientations are frequently observed in herbal and animal natural fibers [45,260,261], If the split nature of the orientation distribution is clearly detected, the streak method can be applied or adapted. 

To determine the antibacterial activity of the treated textile fabrics AATCC Test Method 147 is commonly used. In this method, an agar surface is inoculated by making a parallel streak. The sample is then pressed onto the plate, which is inoculated and incubated at 37 °C and the antibacterial activity is estimated by observing the decrease in growth of the organism from one end of each streak to the other end and from one streak to the next streak and by determining the size of the zone of inhibition. 

Knitted fabrics used for medical applications - such as in wound dressings - require a zone of inhibition. These may be studied using the AATCC 147 Parallel Streak Standard Method this is an appropriate semi quantitative method for evaluating the antibacterial activity of diffusible antimicrobial agents on treated fabrics. A test result for a fabric treated with the silver salt suspension and a control fabric is presented in Rg. 5.5, where the tested bacteria was Staphylococcus aureus.

This is a method originating from the textile industry but is sometimes also used as a base for testing textiles or other substrates coated with PVC or PU. A swab of pure bacteria, usually Staphyloccocus aureus or Klebsiella sp., but others can also be used, is drawn across nutrient agar in five parallel lines. The sample for testing is then intimately placed across the five streaks. If the biocide migrates from the sample, it will prevent growth of the bacterium near the edge and under the sample itself.
