Anadin Extra contains paracetamol, aspirin and caffeine, the latter being a mild stimulant that increases the absorption and activity of the analgesics, paracetamol and aspirin. [Pg.74]

Like paracetamol, aspirin is an analgesic and antipyretic drug which is commonly available for sale over the counter at many shops and supermarkets, as well as pharmacies. However, it also has a third action, to reduce inflammation—it is an anti-inflammatory drug. It belongs to a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. [Pg.59]

As up to 10% of about 42 000 dialysis patients have suffered from renal insufficiency due to analgesic nephropathy (in the postphenacetin era), German nephrologists have demanded that medications that contain fixed combinations of analgesics (paracetamol, aspirin, or propyphenazone plus caffeine) be withdrawn from the market, following the example of their US colleagues in the National Kidney Foundation (27). [Pg.590]

Despite the high prevalence of the use of minor analgesics (aspirin and paracetamol) there is little information available on the association between the use of these analgesics and the risk of hypertension. A prospective cohort study in 80 020 women aged 31-50 years has provided some useful information (5). The women had participated in the Nurses Health Study II and had no previous history of hypertension. The frequency of use of paracetamol, aspirin, and NSAIDs was collected by mailed questionnaires and cases of physician-diagnosed hypertension were identified by self-report. During 164 000 person-years of follow-up, 1650 incident cases of hypertension were identified. Overall, 73% of the cohort had used paracetamol at least 1-4 days/month, 51% had used aspirin, and 77% had used an NS AID. Compared with non-users of paracetamol the age-adjusted relative risk... [Pg.2680]

There is no official OTC status for drugs in India. However, there is a classification of drugs termed as home remedies under Schedule K, such as paracetamol, aspirin, cough and cold preparations, rubs, liniments and the like, which can be stocked and marketed as per said provisions under Schedule K and rules thereof. As there is no official OTC status, drugs (other than those in Schedule K) cannot be advertised in the lay media. Guidelines are under preparation for establishing OTC drugs as well as prescription to OTC switch policy. [Pg.209]

Paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen can be used to reduce fever, if present, and ease headache and muscle pains in influenza and general discomfort with colds. [Pg.133]

Paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen are more or less equally effective, but there is often personal preference for one. [Pg.133]

Analgesia may be necessary for the after-effects of venepuncture or following therapeutic radiographic procedures. Peripherally acting analgesics, for example paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen should be sufficient. For pain that is more severe codeine may be necessary. See Chapter 12. [Pg.261]

The amount of the substance and mode of eiqiosure is much more important than any assumed tolerance that might develop toward poisons. A careful look at Table 1.3 will reveal a number of natural and artificial substances listed such as paracetamol, aspirin, caffeine, sodium nitrite and nicotine, which are more or less toxic, but still used in everyday life. This might seem contradictory at first sight, but there is a marked dose-response relationship. A lot of toxic substances may also have positive effects and can be used if there is a large difference between beneficial and toxic doses. There is an old Latin saying sola dosis facit venenum—it is the dose that makes the poison. Even very toxic botulinum toxin has an everyday use in cosmetics, it removes wrinkles when applied cautiously on the forehead between the eyebrows. This Botox cure has an effect for more than half a year a lot of celebrities use it instead of plastic surgeries. [Pg.8]

The analysis of purines and pyrimidines has historically always been performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV-detection [11]. The specificity of this detection method has improved following the introduction of dual-wavelength and multiple wavelength (diode-array) instruments. Nevertheless, the presence of interfering substances such as methylated purines (cf. coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks) and aromatic amino acid metabolites (cf. intestinal malabsorption) seriously hampers the interpretation. Moreover, many drugs such as antibiotics, aromatics (paracetamol, aspirin), methylated purines (theophylline), and pur-... [Pg.50]

The steady decline in renal function can often be halted and sometimes reversed by correction of fluid and electrolyte disturbances, treatment of hypertension and urinary tract infection, and by the scrupulous avoidance of analgesics (143, 146, 193, 201, 202 ). It is not sufficient merely to persuade the patient to discontinue phena-cetin-containing analgesics. Paracetamol, aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs should also be stopped if at all possible. [Pg.74]

On the basis of IR and Raman spectroscopy (Table 5.2, Figure 5.12), which are relatively cheap, fast, and easy for technical operation and interpretation of data, and do not require sample dissolution methods, we presented the quantitative determination of the six binary mixtures with the studied cephalosporins in solid state, which was reported for the first time in the literature. The IR-LD analysis of oriented colloids as a liquid crystal suspension was applied for experimental IR band assignment and selection of appropriate bands for quantitative determination. This method gives additional supramolecular solid-state structural information at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. It also avoids the phase transition and guarantees the study of different forms without polymorph transitions. This approach has been applied recently for caffeine as a matrix compound and for studying the polymorphs of Paracetamol, Aspirin, Phenacetin , and Salophen. The spectroscopic data were... [Pg.136]

The analysis of APC tablets (a mixture of aspirin, phenacetin, and caffeine) has been a common undergraduate laboratory experiment. This experiment describes modifications to the standard analysis for APC tablets in which paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) replaces phenacetin. [Pg.448]

Cross-reactions with aspirin and NSAIDs are of practical importance. Typically, AIA patients are sensitive to all NSAIDs that preferentially inhibit COX-1 (table 2). Acetaminophen (paracetamol), a weak inhibitor of COX-1, is regarded as a relatively safe therapeutic alternative for almost all patients with AIA. High doses of the drug (>1,000 mg) have been reported to provoke mild, easily reversed bronchos-pasm in some AIA patients [13]. Some rare, well-documented cases of coexistence of aspirin and paracetamol sensitivity have been described. However, according to a recent meta-analysis, less that 2% of asthmatics are sensitive to both aspirin and paracetamol [14]. [Pg.174]

Typically, funding to embark on information and/or knowledge management initiatives within the life sciences only occurs after a serious failure within the business, such as a project failure or a withdrawal of a medicine from the market. Recently, COX-2 programs across the industry are under close scrutiny since the highly publicized withdrawal of Vioxx [10]. Of course, there has been no withdrawal of aspirin, paracetamol, alcohol, or tobacco products, which are well known as toxic. [Pg.173]

Body temperature is lowered by drugs that inhibit the activity of the cyclooxygenase (e.g. aspirin, paracetamol) and hence decrease the formation of prostaglandins. In view of the benefit that fever may provide, it is questionable whether this is beneficial for patients in recovery from infection. [Pg.425]

Benorylate (315) [4 -(acetamido)phenyl-2-acetoxybenzoate] is another example. It is the ester between two well-known antiinflamatory drugs, aspirin and paracetamol, and is employed in rheumatoid arthritis therapy. In view of the chemical structure with three photolabile groups (two esters and one amide), its possible phototoxicity has been investigated. From the preparative irradiations, it has been concluded that the PFR takes place with breaking of the central C—O bond to yield 5-acetamido-2 -acetoxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone (316). This product undergoes transacetylation to 5 -acetamido-2 -acetoxy-2-hydroxy-benzophenone (318) (Scheme 80) [300]. [Pg.122]

Drugs must also be considered as foreign compounds, and an essential part of drug treatment is to understand how they are removed from the body after their work is completed. Glucuronide formation is the most important of so-called phase II metabolism reactions. Aspirin, paracetamol, morphine, and chloramphenicol are examples of drugs excreted as glucuronides. [Pg.489]
