Peripherally acting analgesics

This group of analgesics contains aspirin-like drugs and paracetamol. Table 12.6 lists commonly used peripherally acting analgesics. 

Aspirin First choice for mild to moderate pain Not in children under 16

Analgesia may be necessary for the after-effects of venepuncture or following therapeutic radiographic procedures. Peripherally acting analgesics, for example paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen should be sufficient. For pain that is more severe codeine may be necessary. See Chapter 12. 

Adjuncts to radiography include peripherally acting analgesics and possibly codeine for pain after injection or other procedures and topical anaesthetics prior to injection.

Since the primary purpose of this review is to study the opiates and their immediate derivatives, it is not proposed to examine in detail the interactions of the weak, peripherally-acting analgesics with neuronal transmitters readers interested in this group of drugs per se may consult reviews by Randall [4] and De Stevens [5]. However, this is not to totally dismiss as unimportant the role of central neuronal transmitters in the formulation and perception of some forms of chronic inflammatory or somatic pain a number of recent reports have demonstrated the value of certain tricyclic anti-depressant agents in alleviating this type of pain in man [6,7].
