Paints, inks, coatings, and adhesives

The same principles used in selecting a silane for reinforced plastics can be used to select a silane for paints, inks, coatings, and adhesives. The chemical nature of the organic material that is used in the application is the major criterion that governs the effectiveness of a particular coupling agent as an adhesion promoter in any application.

One large-scale use of this process is in the production of synthetic rubber and, on a small-scale, in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene. The other large-scale use is in the production of plastics dispersions used as such (without first coagulating them) for the production of paints, pigments, inks, coatings, and adhesive paste (e.g., polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl propionate, and polyacrylic ester dispersions). 

MAJOR USES Used in manufacture of plastic masses, films, lacquers, emulsion paint substances, glue, adhesives, paper coatings, water-based paints, inks, hairsprays and chewing gum.

Uses Antimicrobial for adhesives, cosmetics, aq. agric. prods., construction, household prods, (cleaners, detergents, floor care, etc.), inks, latexes, metalworking fluids, oil drilling fluids, paints, paper coatings, and textile spinning emulsions...

X-ray microscopy (XRM) allows non-destructive investigation of the micro-structure (fractures) of plastics, paints, adhesives, and inks. Coatings on surfaces and fibres within composite structures may be studied. Examples of X-ray micrography are the observations of inclusions in paint and ink coatings and surfaces of painted substrates.
