Oxidation glue

The BLM layer uses a glue layer of chromium or titanium. These metals stick well to other metals and most dielectrics, but they are not solderable. Copper, nickel, and silver have been used as the solder-wetting layer for BLM in appHcations involving 95% lead—5% tin solders. Gold is commonly used as the oxidation layer on account of its resistance to oxidation and its excellent solderabiUty. [Pg.530]

From antiquity, glues had been made almost entirely from materials of animal or vegetable origin, and were sensitive to moisture, oxidation, and bacterial or fungus attack. Because of these deficiencies, production of durable plywood, for example, was not possible. The modern plywood industry actually owes its growth to the availabiUty of relatively low cost urea adhesives. Plywood and chipboard or wood chip glues are often made at the plywood and chip board mill. [Pg.325]

An electrorefining plant may operate with either an acid or an alkaline bath. The acid bath contains stannous sulfate, cresolsulfonic or phenolsulfonic acids (to retard the oxidation of the stannous tin in the solution), and free sulfuric acid with P-naphthol and glue as addition agents to prevent tree-like deposits on the cathode which may short-circuit the cells. The concentration of these addition agents must be carefliUy controlled. The acid electrolyte operates at room temperature with a current density of ca 86—108 A/m, cell voltage of 0.3 V, and an efficiency of 85%. Anodes (95 wt % tin) have a life of 21 d, whereas the cathode sheets have a life of 7 d. The main handicap of MD is the knowledge of the function [/( ). There are some systems where reliable approximations to the true (7( r, ) are available. This is, for example, the case of ionic oxides. (7( rJ) is in such a case made of coulombic (pairwise) interactions and short-range terms. A second example is a closed-shell molecular system. In this case the interaction potentials are separated into intraatomic and interatomic parts. A third type of physical system for which suitable approaches to [/( r, ) exist are the transition metals and their alloys. To this class of models belong the glue model and the embedded atom method. There are only a few commercial uses for europium. Europium oxide, (Eu O ), a compound of europium, is added to infra-sensitive phosphors to enhance the red colors on TV and computer-monitor picture tubes. It is also added to fluorescent light tubes to increase their efflciency, as well as to some materials to make lasers. Since it is a good neutron absorber, it is part of nuclear reactor control rods. Europium is an additive to the glue used on postage stamps, thus making it possible for the electronic sorting machines in U.S. postal offices to read the stamps. [Pg.290]

If a single metal film is deposited on an oxide, the sheet resistance measurement results can by easily interpreted and converted to the thickness. In practice, however, this is not usually the case. For example, in W CVD, the tungsten is not directly deposited on oxide due to high residual stress and unreliable adhesion. A titanium (Ti) layer must be first deposited as a glue layer. In addition, to prevent the fluorine in the CVD-precursor WFg from directly reacting with Ti (a strong catalytic reaction will occur), a barrier layer of titanium nitride (TiN) must be deposited on top of the Ti. Zinc oxide occurs in nature as mineral zincite. It is the most important zinc compound and has numerous industrial applications. Zinc oxide is the pigment in white paints. It is used to make enamels, white printing inks, white glue, opaque glasses, rubber products and floor tiles. It is used in cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals, dental cements, storage batteries, electrical equipment, and piezoelectric devices. Other applications are as a flame retardant, as a UV absorber in plastics, and a reagent in analytical chemistry. A major application of zinc oxide is in the preparation of most zinc salts. Protective oil is a good alternative to glue for crystal mounting because of the large residual stress that epoxies can cause. Sensitive species must be handled with special care, because exposure to oxidative atmosphere or anyway to ambient temperature may produce irreversible damage. For this reason, mounting the sample in an inert atmosphere within glove boxes is sometimes necessary.
