Organizational principles

After considering the evolutionary origins of the olfactory system and some basic principles of olfaction, this brief review examines one of the most extensively studied examples of neural processing of semiochemical information the sex pheromone-specific olfactory subsystem in male moths. This male-specific subsystem can be viewed as representing an exaggeration of organizational principles and functional mechanisms that are characteristic of olfactory systems in general. 

The male moth s pheromone-analyzing olfactory subsystem is composed of pheromone-specific antennal ORCs projecting to the similarly specialized, anatomically defined MGC in the AL and MGC output neurons that project to olfactory foci in the protocerebrum. This subsystem is an example of a labeled-line pathway (18). Its specialization to detect, amplify, and analyze features of sex-pheromonal signals and its consequent exaggeration of common olfactory organizational principles...

All major network sciences seem to concur on the view that real networks are not random but are based on robust and strong organizational principles. As explained above, major metabohc network analysis techniques could be strongly influenced by the network reductionist approach, where the behavior of the network could be potentially predicted by its elementary constituents and their interactions alone. Therefore, the hierarchical and scale-free property of gene networks can effectively complement techniques like metabolic control analysis and become a vital tool in future gene network analysis (Almaas and Barabasi, 2006). 

Delegating exam selection to the EMR may even be a requirement to comply with access policies, especially if access control is at the level of individual patients. In addition, many organizational principles that were already available in the EMR can now be reused, for example, to retrieve image exams from task-oriented work lists (Fig. 8.3).

Similarly to technical solutions, operational solutions are derived from safety-related organizational principles and are applied to the main operational activities. For example, an operator could do his job in a very cost-efficient way, but, after a risk analysis is performed, a safety-related operational solution—the way the technology is used—will be applied to the job in order to reduce the risk. A safety checklist before an activity may also be seen as an operational solution, as it is an additional activity with a focus on preventing any abnormalities during the operation. The safety checklist may be seen as a part of safety-critical activities, but it is not a barrier by itself. 

Thus, we can retain the general meaning of self-determination as a group s control over its own political future but redefine the idea of self-determination as it applies to state institutions. This can be done if the basic organizational principles of multinational states and the basic principles for conflict resolution recognize, first, that self-determination does not require statehood, and, second, that all national groups deserve equal status with respect to self-determination by virtue of what they are. 

In this section, 1 consider how the equal self-determination can be realized within the borders of a federation. The federations I discuss contain national or both national and territorial, but not exclusively territorial, units. Thus, they are either multinational or mixed (asymmetrical) federations. I first consider general organizational principles for such states and then deal with a number of challenges that a theory of multinational federalism needs to answer.
