Organization of International

Dr Violante was Head of the Dipartimento di Scienze Chimico-Agrarie and is Coordinator of the Doctoral School in Agrobiology and Agrochemistry of the University of Naples Federico II. He has served on many committees of the Italian Society of Soil Science (President of the Session Soil Chemistry), and Italian Society of Agricultural Chemistry. He is vice-president and liaisons officer of Gruppo Italiano AIPEA. He was the scientific chairman and chief organizer of International and National Congresses. 

Professor Afanas ev has been Chairman of the Russian Committee of Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR) (1989 1998), a member of the International Editorial Board of Free Radical Biology Medicine (1994-1998), and the organizer of International Meetings on Free Radicals in Chemistry and Biology Leningrad (1991), Moscow (1994), Kiev (1995), Moscow-Yaroslavl (together with Profs. A. Azzi and H. Sies) (1998). 

The ICO issued guidelines, originally compiled by James N. BeMiller in 1989, for the organization of international carbohydrate symposia and these have been of considerable assistance to future organizers. The locations for future symposia are approved tentatively for six years, and definitively for four years, in advance. There has been difficulty only once, with the meeting scheduled for 2006. Boreskov was a tireless supporter of international cooperation in catalysis. He contributed to the Organization of International Congress on Catalysis by serving as president from 1972 to 1976 and on his initiative, regular bilateral seminars on catalysis—Soviet-Japanese (1971) and Soviet-French (1972)—were organized. Boreskov was the chief coordinator in the USSR in the Soviet-American Scientific cooperation on the problem of Chemical Catalysis in 1973-1980. He was a member of the editorial board of a number of authoritative journals, both foreign and Soviet. 

In the eighties, the european countries started to show some interest to that problem. It is only in June 1984 that the EC Commission proposed standarts of permissible pollutants in the exhaust gas from motor vehicles to be introduced in Europe these standarts were approved by the Ministers of the Environment one year later. Very quickly, a number of Academic research laboratories started working on the subject, and namely on the development of new catalysts. We thought that a need for exchange of results and of ideas had appeared and I have initiated the organization of international meetings on this topics at the University of Brussels under the title Catalysis and Automotive Pollution Control associated with the acronym CAPoC-... 

During his professional career, he made significant contributions in several fields including precision calorimeter design and construction, determination of thermodynamic data for ligand interactions with protons and cations, compilation of thermodynamic data, and organization of international symposia. He was coorganizer of the first Symposium on Macrocyclic Chemistry. This Symposium is now held on an annual basis.
