Organic compounds present

Spent acid burning is actually a misnomer, for such acids are decomposed to SO2 and H2O at high temperatures in an endothermic reaction. Excess water in the acid is also vaporized. Acid decomposition and water vaporization require considerable heat. Any organic compounds present in the spent acid oxidize to produce some of the required heat. To supply the additional heat required, auxiUary fuels, eg, oil or gas, must be burned. When available, sulfur and H2S are excellent auxiUary fuels. [Pg.184]

A survey of 20 brands of typographical correction fluids found that several contained 10% or less trichloroethylene, although other volatile organic compounds present at higher levels probably posed a greater hazard to people using these products (Ong et al. 1993). Various other consumer products have been found to contain trichloroethylene, such as paint removers, strippers, adhesives, and lubricants (Frankenberry et al. 1987). [Pg.223]

Most research on the rhizospherc environment has been forcedly descriptive in the past. Recent advances show that organic compounds present in the rhizo-sphere can have a specific role in plant-micro-organism-soil interactions. Moreover, it starts to be elucidated ... [Pg.13]

The first chapter defines the spatial and functional features of the rhizosphere, which make this environment the primary site of interaction between soil, plant, and microorganisms. Among the multitude of organic compounds present in the rhizosphere tho.se released by plant roots are the most important from a qualitative and quantitative point of view furthermore, the relationships with soil components of any released compound need to be considered (Chapter 2). The release of these compounds strongly depends on the physiological status of the plants and is related to the ability of plant roots to modify the rhizosphere in order to cope with unfavorable stress-reducing conditions. These aspects are dis-... [Pg.436]

The earlier methods for the measurement of organic phosphorus generally used fairly drastic measures to decompose the organic compounds present and free the phosphates. For example, Duursma [34] used the technique originally described by Harvey [35] which included autoclaving the seawater with sulfuric acid at 140 °C for 6 h, at a pressure of 3 atmospheres. These methods required... [Pg.483]

Promoter species have been mentioned previously. These are additional metals or organic compounds present in either the original alloy or in the lixiviant. They are more than just a second catalytic metal, although bi-metal skeletal catalysts are possible. Promoter species increase the activity of the... [Pg.145]

MS andMS-MS techniques, meanwhile, have developed has the method of choice in the analysis of unknown organic compounds present as polar or non-polar constituents in all types of mixtures. This development in... [Pg.156]

As far as acyclic allene hydrocarbon intermediates are concerned, these begin with a C3H2 species, 254, about which there has been considerable discussion since it has also been detected in radioastronomy studies to belong to the (growing) number of organic compounds present in interstellar and circumstellar space [105]. [Pg.219]

To identify the presence of undesirable specific organic compounds present as impurities in a number of pharmaceutical substances, namely morphine in apomorphine hydrochloride hydrazine in carbidopa 3-aminopropanol in dexampanthenol etc.,... [Pg.425]

The nitroso compounds can be formed by reaction with organic compounds present in the atmosphere and include two categories namely N-nitroso and C-nitroso compounds. [Pg.1182]

The multitude of organic compounds present in the environment makes it impossible to discuss each compound, or even compound class. A general rationale for the matrix approach to preparation of reference materials is presented below, as well as a specific discussion of several classes of particular importance. [Pg.66]

Another means of greatly increasing the amount of data on the organic compounds present in samples is through the use of universal techniques such as high resolution gas chromatography (5,6) combined with flame ionization detection (HRGC/FID). [Pg.70]

A portion (10.2 cm x 17.8 cm) of each RSP sample was sequentially extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus with cyclohexane, di-chloromethane and acetone, (8 hr. for each solvent) in the order given. A more complete extraction of the organic compounds present in particulate matter is achieved and a partial separation of the organic compounds into non-polar, moderately polar and polar fractions is obtained by this method. The volume of each extract was reduced to 10.0 ml using a rotary evaporator. The samples were then stored in a freezer at -15 C until further analysis. Weights of extracts were determined by weighing duplicate 100 yl aliquots of each, taken to dryness on a slide warmer (40 C), on a Cahn Electrobalance. [Pg.198]

Polar organic compounds present in fuel can provide a protective, film-like layer on iron and steel surfaces. This film helps prevent water from reaching the metal surface to initiate corrosion in fuel storage and transportation equipment. [Pg.55]

Give two reasons why an organic compound present in a system at high concentrations can be found to be biodegraded at a rate that is independent of that compound s concentration. That is, the loss can be modeled ... [Pg.768]

The foremost conclusion is that synthetic polymers are applicable to a wide range of organic compounds present in many different kinds of aqueous samples, and the polymers are being used extensively. The extensive current and expected future use of polymers will force the availability of pure polymers from the commercial suppliers. The users will have to pay the price for this convenience in the same way they are now willing to pay a premium for the convenience of high-purity solvents. [Pg.228]

Isolation of Organic Compounds Present in Water at Low Concentrations Using Supercritical Fluid Carbon Dioxide... [Pg.470]

On the basis of this work, it appears that the supercritical fluid carbon dioxide extraction of organic compounds present in water at low levels may be useful only in the case of volatile organic species. Even for these compounds, however, if efficient recovery of the compounds is desired and appropriate, certain limitations of existing trapping techniques remain to be overcome. [Pg.487]
