Organic coatings ASTM standards

Where changes in appearance are of paramount interest, as in the case of metallic and organic coatings on steel or other metals, visual examination is most desirable. To facilitate ratings on such a basis, photographic standards have been employed, as, for example, in tests on chromium-plated steel undertaken by ASTM Committee B-8 on Electrodeposited Metallic Coatings . These ratings are supplemented by a shorthand description of the nature of the deterioration observed. 

Similarly, photographic standards are recommended for rating organic coatings with respect to different modes of deterioration in ASTM 0610 1985. 

Organic coatings are commonly evaluated using salt water immersion, salt fog or spray, modified salt exposure tests (e.g., salt fog with added SO2), and various cyclic exposure tests. Humidity exposure and water immersion, and, for many applications, physical resistance tests (adhesion, impact resistance, etc.) are widely used preliminary tests. Standard methods for most of these tests are given in compilations of standard tests such as the Annual Book of ASTM Standards (16). Test methods have been extensively reviewed (e.g., 17-23).

As mentioned above, coating thickness is found to affect many of the properties of coatings, and therefore, must be measured accurately. There is a variety of methods to measure both dry and wet film thickness, both non-destructive and destructive. An in-depth discussion of all the possible methods is beyond the scope of this chapter, so we shall only mention the main techniques and direct the reader to the appropriate references. A comprehensive review article covers many methods for organic coating thickness measurement [61], and many techniques are covered in the ASTM standards.

These different types of characterization are presently the subject matter of important works of standardization in the AFNOR and ISO organizations. We give below a non-exhaustive overview of tests practiced at present on pieces and ceramic coatings, with the knowledge that some drafts of ISO, AFNOR or ASTM standards are under preparation.

There are a large number of standard test methods available for paints to ensure that specific performance criteria are met. The most widely used standards originate from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), British Standards Institution (BSI), Deutsche Institut fiir Normung (DIN), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The methods used will depend on the paint type and intended application. A selection of methods is described below that are likely to be used for water-based coatings. 

On the other hand, a series of technical norms have been developed to guarantee the quality and characteristics and/or properties of paints and coating materials these are provided by international organizations such as the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and ISO (International Standard Organization).
