Optical patterning

The individual spherulite shows up by the characteristic Maltese cross optical pattern under crossed Polaroids, although the Maltese cross is truncated in the event of impinging spherulites. [Pg.242]

The detection of Hquid crystal is based primarily on anisotropic optical properties. This means that a sample of this phase looks radiant when viewed against a light source placed between crossed polarizers. An isotropic solution is black under such conditions (Fig. 12). Optical microscopy may also detect the Hquid crystal in an emulsion. The Hquid crystal is conspicuous from its radiance in polarized light (Fig. 13). The stmcture of the Hquid crystalline phase is also most easily identified by optical microscopy. Lamellar Hquid crystals have a pattern of oil streaks and Maltese crosses (Fig. 14a), whereas ones with hexagonal arrays of cylinders give a different optical pattern (Fig. 14b). [Pg.201]

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) attempt to emulate their biological counterparts. McCulloch and Pitts (1943) proposed a simple model of a neuron, and Hebb (1949) described a technique which became known as Hebbian learning. Rosenblatt (1961), devised a single layer of neurons, called a Perceptron, that was used for optical pattern recognition. [Pg.347]

Two general types of multilayer process may be distinguished, depending on whether they use oxygen reactive ion etching (RIE) (4) or optical exposure (5-11) to transfer the pattern into the resist. Optical pattern transfer may suffer from some limitation due to substrate reflections, but has an advantage in the simplicity of the equipment compared to RIE. [Pg.333]

We just missed being seriously hurt. We had an idiotic motor which picked up speed rapidly—you couldn t control it—it broke one of the glass plates, which flew into pieces. We had to start all over. Four [actually six] years later, 1 did the same thing for Jacques Doucet, a half-sphere with spirals which took off from the same idea. 1 even did some research on optics, [patterns] which disappeared, black and white lines—... [Pg.323]

Taking into account the simplicity of obtaining optical patterns of erythrocytes and the abihty to detect the structures of pathological precipitation of substances, which are not characteristic of a normal blood plasma sample, the proposed method has significant diagnostic importance and advantages summarised below ... [Pg.106]

A strain-biased antiparallel domain configuration is induced in the plane of a memory-type PLZT (7/65/35 with a grain size of 1.5 /mi) plate approximately 60 fim thick, as shown in Fig. 8.17(a). A strain of 10 3 is achieved by bonding the PLZT to a thicker plate of transparent Perspex and bending the combination so that the ceramic is in tension in the convex surface. Combining a photo-conductive layer, e.g. polyvinyl carbazole, CdS, ZnS or selenium, with the PLZT plate allows an optical pattern to be electrically stored, read and erased. Transparent ITO electrodes sandwich the photoconductor-PLZT combination. [Pg.461]

First we briefly summarize the existing schemes and their range of applicabilities. In a circularly polarized optical trap, birefringent microparticles are seen to rotate [2, 3], Microobjects, when trapped in a spiral optical pattern, have also been observed to rotate [4-6]. Rotations of specifically fabricated rather big rotors under an optical tiap have been... [Pg.584]

From the usual optical patterns produced, both N and dN/dr can be obtained. Since and rjj are easily measured, s/D can be calculated using Eq. (35.86). Then M can be obtained from the Svedberg equation. The conditions, Eq. (35.86), must be correct at all times however, when the system reaches a steady state, that is when it is in sedimentation equilibrium, the flow must be zero everywhere so that... [Pg.939]

The mask-making process consists of generating the pattern of the circuit on a chrome-covered quartz plate coated with a resist film. There are four types of equipment used in writing mask optical pattern generators, electron-beam writers, focused-ion-beam writers, and laser writers. Lithographic exposure of the resist-coated, chrome-covered quartz plate involves the repeated exposure of the circuit pattern with a stepper or a scanner. In earlier times, lithographic... [Pg.623]
