Auxiliary air cupboards have many problems, most of which have been reported in the literature. A main problem that does not receive much attention is coordination of the flow into the opening controlled by the exhaust with the supply flow directed down immediately above the opening. This includes the complex and simultaneous relationships between velocities, flow rates, flow widths, flow directions, flow stability, turbulence, and temperatures. To this should be added the same problems that exist for normal fume cupboards, such as necessary exhaust flow rate and velocity, flow pattern inside the cupboard, working procedures, and the influence of people on the flow pattern outside and into the opening. The auxiliary air outlet may also be a source of noise.

Fig. 1.2 shows a gas turbine power plant operating on a closed circuit. The dotted chain control surface (F) surrounds a cyclic gas turbine power plant (or cyclic heat engine) through which air or gas circulates, and the combustion chamber is located within the second open control surface (Z). Heat (2b is transferred from Z to Y, and heat (2a is rejected from Y. The two control volumes form a complete power plant.

Pressure drop. Good control requires a substantial pressure drop through the valve. For pumped systems, the drop through the valve should be at least 1/3 of the pressure drop in the system, with a minimum of IS psi. When the expected variation in flow is small, this rule can be relaxed. In long liquid transportation lines, for instance, a fully open control valve may absorb less than 1% of the system pressure drop. In systems with centrifugal pumps, the variation of head with capacity must be taken into account when sizing the valve. Example 7.2, for instance, illustrates how the valve drop may vary with flow in such a system.

A significant improvement in neuropsychological functions associated with the frontal lobe after withdrawal of topiramate in epilepsy patients was reported in an open controlled study (643). Damper opening controls the temperature of the gas leaving the cool end of the kiln by changing the amount of combustion air drawn into the kiln.

By a technique which interposed a rotating sector between a source of UV radiation and a dilatometer bearing a monomer, variations in the rotational speed of the sector and size of the opening, controlled bursts of radiation strike the monomer and induce polymerization. From the frequency of exposure and the effect on the polymerization many of the kinetic constants were evaluated. In this connection it should be noted that vinyl acetate exhibits virtually no absorption of UV radiation at 290-300 nm. On the other hand, acetaldehyde has an extinction coefficient of 14 at 290 nm and an extinction coefficient of 15 at 300 nm. Its absorption peak is at 350 mn with an extinction coefficient of 16 [181].
