The oil companies by themselves have not invested much on biotechnology development. However, there are exceptions ... 

Studies on biotechnology purchase decisions that used the theory of planned behavior (Fishbein and Ajzen, 1975) generally yielded results that support consumers attitude toward biotechnology as an important determinant of purchase decisions. However, one important point to note is that the most important attitude in purchase decisions was the one toward the specific product in question, not the general attitude toward biotechnology. 

Most of the US s problems stem from the EU s de factor moratorium on biotechnology approvals, which has been in place since 1998. According to one French source, there are no signs that the moratorium will be lifted until traceability and labeling laws are in place (Agra Europe, 2002, pp. EP 6-7). US undersecretary of State, Alan Larson echoes the importance of this issue as a sticking point between the EU and the US (Larson 2002b).

Over the last thirty years, many approaches for H2 production by whole-cell and cell-free systems have been explored, and a number of pilot-scale feasibility studies have been performed. A vast amount of knowledge in the area of bioconversions is available through literature and many of the strains described in publications and patents have been submitted to culture collections, from which they can be retrieved. A number of frequently used culture collections and information centers on culture collections is listed in Table 5.6. From these collections, strains that have been carefully typed and characterized can be obtained. In many cases, information on biotechnological apphcations of the strains is included in the collection and suitable growth media are provided.
