Biotechnology developments

The oil companies by themselves have not invested much on biotechnology development. However, there are exceptions ... 

The time taken for biotechnological developments in oil refining has been, so far, very long. However, it should be noted that the MB and GE advances have only been recent and the magnitude of involvement and efforts by the oil industry itself has not been substantial. Assuming a more proactive involvement of the oil industry, the incorporation of modern tools and the building of the much needed multidisciplinary team, the developmental time should decrease. Nevertheless, any current development has to be oriented to address the issues that will come up in stated future scenarios, such as the integrated bio-oil-refineries of the future.

The estimated PHA production cost for the two-step process is between 2.20 and 4.40/kg (27). The potential of this process has caught the attention of I-PHA BioPolymers, a Hong Kong-based company involved in environmental biotechnology development, which recently licensed the technology from the University of Hawaii. I-PHA BioPolymers plans to develop and build a pilot plant for the production of PHAs and fertilizers (28). 

Dr. Ganguly established a President s Award to recognize outstanding achievements in his drug discovery organization, and we defined an equivalent award for all of Development, including analytical development, biotechnology development, chemical development, and pharmaceutical development. 

Our interactions with Biotechnology Development and the company Safety and Environmental departments depended on the project. The Safety and Environmental Departments were particularly involved when new chemicals were being handled. Interactions with Patents department were always strong, if intermittent, since the creation of patentable intellectual property was a frequent outcome of our work.

This survey of the Western world should not make us forget that Japan also has a thriving pharmaceutical industry. Three firms in particular—Takeda, Sankyo, and Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company—are of international repute. Takeda, the largest, is also the oldest, having been founded by the Takeda family in 1781. It has a joint venture with Abbott in the United States. Out of twenty-five blockbuster drugs currently available in the United States, six were discovered in Japan. But Japan remains weak in biotechnological developments, which are the source of much Western drug innovation.

Other scientific interest surrounds a derivative of kiwellin called kissper, also an extract from kiwi. Kissper is a member of a new class of pore-forming peptides that influence cell membrane porosity having potential for biotechnology developments in drug delivery.
