With respect to inorganic self-assembly this would involve preferential binding of like metal ions by like ligands in a mixture of ligands and ions. Indeed, selective formation of helicates was obtained in mixtures of oligo-bipyridine strands of type 128-131 and 148 with suitable metal ions [9.173]. 

Electrostatic self-assembly was combined with supramolecular chemistry to obtain inclusion complexes of a polymeric nonlinear optical (NLO) active dye and modified [3-cyclodextrin with induced chromophore orientation [37], The polyanion is a N,N-diallyl-aniline and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate copolymer functionalized with pendant azo group. The modified /i-cyclodextrin oligo-cation was obtained by treatment of hcptakis(6-dco y-6-iodo-/i-cyclodcxtrin) with excess pyridine. A linear polyamine, chitosan, was also combined with the polyanion, for comparison. Films were deposited on glass slides by dipping them alternatively in aqueous solutions of the cation and the polyanion. UV-visible spectra indicate dye aggregation and suggest the formation of an inclusion complex of the dye with the cyclodextrin, thus isolating the chromophores.

A short oligo(L-alanine) segment was envisioned to induce self-assembly into high-aspect-ratio ID aggregates in solution via the formation of (5-sheets. 

HiPCO-SWCNTs were oxidized in a UV-03 gas-solid interface reaction and subsequently assembled on a rigid oligo(phenylenethynylene) self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The synthesis and isolation of many of these receptors proved to be quite tedious, however, although occasionally convergent strategies could be used. We therefore looked for an alternative way to build up such structures and decided to make use of self-assembly processes of metal complexes [4] to build up self assembled oligo(BINOL) analogs [5], (How similar metal complexes can be used to stabilize peptide microstructures is discussed in Chapter 1.3.)... 

Self-assembly processes have been demonstrated to be an excellent means of building up sophisticated oligo(BINOL) structures [M2102]2+, [M2103]4+, and [Mll2]+. These provide an array of functional groups that could be used for the recognition...

In another example of molecular capsule synthesis, DNA-based capsule formation has been reported. In the example shown in Fig. 3.31, a three-way junction was formed from an equimolar mixture of three programmed oligo-DNA chains. Since this junction had attractive sticky ends , the mixture then further self-assembled into a nanocage.
