Oils for lubrication

Recently it has been possible to use soluble oils for lubrication of some machine tools as well as for lubrication and cooling the cutting tools and the work. 

Molybdenum disulfide is dispersed in greases and oils for lubrication in volatile carriers it is used to form dry coatings of lubricant. Sodium molybdate is an especially effective corrosion inhibitor on aluminum surfaces and is dissolved in cooling solutions to protect aluminum motor blocks in automobiles. 

All soaps are salts of fatty acids. The main difference between soaps is the addition of other ingredients that do not alter their cleaning properties dyes for color, scents for a pleasing odor, and oils for lubrication. Soaps that float are aerated so that they are less dense than water.

The spectrometric oil analysis process is useful for any mechanical moving device that uses oil for lubrication. It tests for the presence of metals, water, glycol, fuel dilution, viscosity, and solid particles. Automotive engines, compressors, and turbines all benefit from oil analysis. Most major oil companies will provide this service if you purchase lubricants from them. 

Lubrication oil system is used to lubricate and cool the bearings at compressor, its driver, gear, and coupling. Seal oil system is used to provide seal oil for lubrication and cooling at seals. For heavily contaminated gas service, a separate lubricaiioD and seal oil system is required. 

In addition to the two gas-pressurization techniques, a third method to remove a liquid cryogen from storage is by using a mechanical pump. For high pressures up to 7 MPa and low flow rates, a positive displacement pump is normally employed. Ideal characteristics of a positive displacement pump are that it (1) be lightweight to allow for mobile applications, (2) be compact with a fast cooldown, (3) use no oil for lubrication to assure contamination-free pumping, and (4) require a very low net positive suction head (NPSH) to minimize cavitation. 

Just as vacuum distillation permits e processing of black crude oils for lubricants, so the solvent processes tend to erase the old crude oil marketing system by which only a few crude oils were considered satisfactory for lubricant manufacture. By solvent methods, the original properties of the oil can be changed so that a uniform grade of oil can be manufactured from a wide variety of crude oils. Of the many processes that have been proposed it liow appears that the Furfural, Duo-Sol, Phenol, Edeleanu, and Propane processes have established their usefulness.
