It is generally only practical to ventilate office spaces by means of a ducted system. If sufficient opening window area is available, either an inlet or extract system alone may be satisfactory, but if optimum control of conditions is required, then both mechanical inlet and extract should be provided. 

The laboratory workers office space should be as close as possible to work areas and to fi equently used files. There should also be room for a typewTiter, if required. The work may be done on a separate desk or a section of desk-height work bench. 

In an outreach to the medicinal chemists at Lilly, a one-week workshop was created and taught in the research building where the organic chemists were located. This allows for no room between pallets, no cross aisles, no office space, no dock space, no space for servicing lift trucks, no toilets, and so on. From 1,000 to 1,500 ft2... 

Including 20 ft2 for miscellaneous items not identified in this section, 110.3 ft2 must be rented, at an annual cost of 44,100/yr. Note that this moderately sized complex is added to an existing electronic materials manufacturing facility. Hence, no direct charges are added for infrastructure, such as non-clean room and office space. The total purchase cost, 6,492,100, provides equipment modules that require small installation costs, on the order of 1% that is, 65,000. Note also that two PECVD reactors are provided to assure uninterrupted operation when the plant is in operation, around the clock, 330 day/yr. While the robot loads and unloads one of the reactors, the other reactor is in operation. 

As a result of this culture, it is common for workers in the voluntary sector to make do with an inadequate working environment. When resources are scarce and the need for services is on the Increase it is difficult to convince some people that spending resources on building office space is a good use of money. 

When I came into the post I inherited an orgsinization with serious financial problems and a poor reputation with users and funders. At this point it would have been counterproductive to have spent money on upgrading the office space. The organization now had an excellent reputation and was financially stable and so the time for change was right. I set myself the following objectives ... 

In practical terms this meant identifying funding to carry out major building works, converting space that was currently used as storage space into office space, and getting the staff and Executive Committee behind these changes.

The studies done so far do not definitively admit or dismiss a correlation between low-frequency magnetic fields and human health. During a typical day, humans are exposed to varying levels of low-frequency electromagnetic fields. This exposure is a byproduct of living in a fast-paced environment. A typical office space will have an ambient low-frequency electromagnetic field ranging between 0.5 and 3 mG. 

Another supportive role that management must accept is the provision for additional resources when QAU responsibilities are increased either by management, by revised or new regulations, or by increased study workloads. Such resources include personnel, office space, equipment, clerical support, etc. Management must continually review and balance the allocation of resources to the quality assurance and scientific study areas to efficiently operate with the desired level of quality.

Unless alternative office space is provided, it is a good idea to have some desk space in the lab where workers can read and write, away from areas used for chemicals. Desk space may also be required for small computers which are a common feature of the modem organic chemistry lab. Drawers or filing cabinets are useful for the safe storage of spectra and other paperwork, and a blackboard is an invaluable laboratory aid.
