Congress passed the Occupational and Safety Health Act to ensure worker and workplace safety. Their goal was to make sure employers provide their workers a place of employment free from recognized hazards to safety and health, such as exposure to toxic chemicals, excessive noise levels, mechanical dangers, heat or cold stress, or unsanitary conditions. In order to establish standards for workplace health and safety, the Act also created the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as the research institution for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA is a division of the U.S. Department of Labor which oversees the administration of the Act and enforces Federal standards in all 50 states.

Mineral oil is the major chemical component of mineral oil hydraulic fluids. Mineral oil belongs to a larger class of chemicals called petroleum distillates. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates petroleum distillate and mineral oil mist levels in workplace air. The occupational exposure limits for an 8-hour workday, 40-hour workweek are 2,000 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) in air for petroleum distillates and 5 mg/m3 for mineral oil mists. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends an exposure limit of 350 mg/m3 of petroleum distillates for a 10-hour workday, 40-hour workweek.

The federal government is concerned about the amount of hexachloroethane that you are exposed to in the environment. The government has established standards and guidelines to prevent you from being overexposed. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set a limit of 1 part per million (ppm) for the hexachloroethane in workplace air over an 8-hour workday. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers hexachloroethane as a potential occupational carcinogen (can cause cancer) and recommends 1 ppm in air as a tolerance value.
