Formulas tend to contain isolates as the protein source to eliminate or reduce the presence of carbohydrates that ate the cause of flatulence and abnormal stools. Care is taken to provide adequate nutrition and to use proteins processed in such a way as to minimize or eliminate any antinutritional factors. The formulation of a typical soy-based infant formula is also given in Table 17. 

For practical purposes, the nutritional quality of UHT milk is similar to that of conventionally pasteurized milk (Miller 1985 Arnold and Roberts 1982 Burton 1980, 1982 Renner 1980 Kosaric et al. 1981 Katz et al. 1981 Ford and Thompson 1981). As with conventionally pasteurized milk, the degree of heat treatment and the conditions of storage can affect the nutrient content of the milk (Burton 1980,1982 Renner 1980 Kosaric et al. 1981 Ford and Thompson 1981 Mehta 1980). However, careful controls on UHT processing, along with proper packaging, can ensure that the nutritional value of milk with regard to protein, fat, carbohydrate, fat-soluble vitamins, most water-soluble vitamins, and minerals is retained (Ford and Thompson 1981). 

Although it is not clear whether clozapine, the disease process, poor nutrition, lack of antenatal care, or a combination of all these factors, contributed to the outcome of this pregnancy. The authors suggested that one should be cautious about using clozapine during pregnancy. 

Accurate assessment of supply and intake is a complex procedure. In practice, a crude estimate of intake can be obtained from a careful clinical history taken by an experienced practitioner or from a food frequency questionnaire that summarizes the content of the individuars diet over several days, depending on how frequently particular typical foods are consumed. A more accurate quantitative assessment usually requires a minimum of three days recording of a complete dietary diary, which is subsequently analyzed using a computer program with reference tables of the nutritional contents of most foods. Unfortunately, estimates of the portion size, amounts consumed, and actual nutritional composition of the food consumed may be inaccurate. In addition, the disease process also affects the amount actually consumed and absorbed, further reducing the accuracy of the estimate of nutritional intake. 

Develop and implement quality improvement activities directed at the process of nutritional and metabolic care. 

The arguments offered above call for caution and the careful, however scientifically sound, evaluation of the safety of food items for human consumption. Close toxicological and pharmacological surveillance of nutritional products with additives and/or the history of chemical or physical processing is of paramount importance. The importance of this surveillance is demonstrated most convincingly by observations made recently in the field of hyperalimentation. Here the patient, deprived of the ability of oral food intake, is dependent on the intravenous infusion of solutions of essential amino acids. For solution stabilization sodium bisulfite was added. This presumed preservative, however, reacts with tryptophan (20) with the formation of products which affect liver tissue adversely (21). 

Of all the efforts to reduce LAL formation, careful control of processing conditions is the most satisfactory approach at this time.
