An additional line of defense is provided by natural killer cells (NK cells), a type of circulating lymphoid cell able to kill cancer cells, to participate in antiviral defenses, and to help control immune responses.273 -276 NK cells, which utilize their own signaling pathways, are also able to use MHC class I molecules to recognize and to spare the lives of normal, healthy cells.277/277a b Partial deprivation of a night s sleep can reduce NK cell activity, damaging the cellular immune response.278... [Pg.1852]

Iron removal Increased iron and ferritin levels are found in approx. 30% of patients with chronic hepatitis B or C. Several studies have shown that the success rate of interferon therapy is reduced in the presence of elevated liver iron values. This is attributed to the fact that iron overload inhibits not only lymphocyte proliferation, but also the function of killer cells and B cells as well as the production of antibodies. Iron plays a role in the formation of free radicals and the occurrence of dangerous lipid peroxidations, (s. pp 68, 401) Furthermore, iron, like oxygen radicals, promotes fibrogenesis. Iron removal leads to an improvement in laboratory parameters and better response to interferon-a therapy. (217, 243) On the other hand, the iron level is reduced as a result of successful IFN therapy. In the case of a higher serum iron status before the initiation of interferon therapy, venesections at one week intervals should be considered, if necessary until normal laboratory values (iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation) have been restored. During interferon therapy, a low-iron diet is advisable, as is the consumption of 2 x 1 cup of black tea (in the morning and at noon) to reduce iron absorption through chelate formation ( cheap, free of side effects and useful )- (s. p. 625) Silymarin also leads to iron mobilization due to chelate formation. [Pg.705]

IL-2 is a 15 kilodalton glycoprotein which is normally produced by antigen or mitogen activated circulating T lymphocytes. It induces natural killer cell activity, enhances the allogeneic response, and activates cytotoxic T lymphocytes [9]. [Pg.686]

The lymphomas are neoplasms of B-, T- or natural killer cells, and characteristically present as tumorous enlargements of peripheral lymphoid or extranodal tissues. As with the leukemias, the lymphomas are subclassified into distinct clinicopathological entities based on lineage, cell of origin and/or putative normal counterpart, and degree of differen-... [Pg.1457]

The modulation of the immune response is highly relevant in tumor cell destruction. The research of Guruvayoorappan and Kuttan[64] focused on the effect of amentoflavone (1) on cell-mediated immune responses in normal and tumor-bearing control animals. The treatment with amentoflavone (1) significantly enhanced the activity of natural killer cells in normal (42.8% cell lysis) and tumor-bearing animals (48.2% cell lysis) on the fifth day, which was... [Pg.179]

These leukemias may express the cytotoxic granule-associated protein TIA-1, which is normally found in natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes regardless of their state of activation. The tumor cells are commonly EBV infected. [Pg.179]

Intramuscular injection of animals with metallic nickel or nickel disulfide (Ni3S2) normally leads to a high incidence of injection-site sarcomas, but this increased incidence is reduced when the nickel is injected along with manganese dust (Sunderman et al. 1976). The mechanism of this effect is not clear, but natural killer cell activity normally undergoes a large decrease following nickel injection, and this is prevented by... [Pg.322]
