NMR application

Before examining NMR applications to problems of stereoregularity, let us conclude the discussion of copolymers by considering some copolymer applications. 

Examples of the unique insights obtained by solid state NMR applications to materials science include the Si/Al distribution in zeolites, the hydrogen microstructure in amorphous films of hydrogenated silicon, and the mechanism for the zeolite-catalyzed oligomerization of olefins. ... 

NMR instrumentation consists of three chief components a magnet, a spectrometer console, and a probe. While in the past much solid state NMR research was conducted on home-built equipment, the current trend is toward the acquisition of commercial systems. The magnets used for solid state NMR applications generally are superconducting solenoids with a cylindrical bore of 89-mm diameter. The most common field strengths available, 4.7, 7.0, 9.4, and 11.7 Tesla, correspond to proton resonance frequencies near 200, 300, 400, and 500 MHz, respectively.

The opening sentence above says it all. NMR is by far the most valuable spectroscopic technique for structure determination. Although wei) just give an overview of the subject in this chapter, focusing on NMR applications to small molecules, more advanced NMR techniques are also used in biological chemistry to study protein structure and folding.

Acknowledgments Several review articles cover in much greater details numerous NMR applications that have been reported in the past years on the use of NMR spectroscopy in the drug discovery process and to monitor target-ligand interactions. In the field of in-process analysis, analytical NMR applications also constitute a growth area - and also in relation to additives. This stems from the fact that the method makes it possible to use chemical analytical data in polymer quality control. Robust tools for hostile chemical plant environments are now available. The field of process analytical chemistry has been pushed to the forefront of the partnership between industry and academia.
