Established and emerging applications of NMR

NMR spectroscopy, and in particular H or NMR, has provided detailed information on stmcture and function attributes of major classes of biomolecule. Indeed, the study of peptides and proteins has lead to major developments and new applications of NMR. Notably, NMR has enabled researchers to follow or trace biochemical pathways and has emerged as an important technology in the analysis and development of new drugs. [Pg.235]

Historically NMR spectroscopy has been utilized primarily for in vitro bioanalyses, but NMR can also be applied to the study of chemical reactions in living organisms ranging from cells to whole body measures. NMR is especially useful for in vivo applications such as measurement of energy metabolism in heart muscle, benefiting from the fact that resonance is relatively easy to observe and generates spectra within seconds. However, while H, and P NMR have [Pg.235]
