Nitrogen steady state

Irradiation of ethyleneimine (341,342) with light of short wavelength ia the gas phase has been carried out direcdy and with sensitization (343—349). Photolysis products found were hydrogen, nitrogen, ethylene, ammonium, saturated hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, propane, / -butane), and the dimer of the ethyleneimino radical. The nature and the amount of the reaction products is highly dependent on the conditions used. For example, the photoproducts identified ia a fast flow photoreactor iacluded hydrocyanic acid and acetonitrile (345), ia addition to those found ia a steady state system. The reaction of hydrogen radicals with ethyleneimine results ia the formation of hydrocyanic acid ia addition to methane (350). Important processes ia the photolysis of ethyleneimine are nitrene extmsion and homolysis of the N—H bond, as suggested and simulated by ab initio SCF calculations (351). The occurrence of ethyleneimine as an iatermediate ia the photolytic formation of hydrocyanic acid from acetylene and ammonia ia the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter has been postulated (352), but is disputed (353). [Pg.11]

Because of the formation of nitrogen oxides, a steady-state ozone concentration cannot be obtained instead, due to the buHdup of nitrogen oxides, an increase in residence time in the discharge results in a decrease in ozone concentration beyond the maximum value. Thus, there is an optimum residence time for maximum ozone production. [Pg.498]

Oxygen Transport. The most widely used methods for measuring oxygen transport are based upon the Ox-Tran instmment (Modem Controls, Inc.). Several models exist, but they all work on the same principle. The most common apphcation is to measure the permeabihty of a film sample. Typically, oxygen is introduced on one side of the film, and nitrogen gas sweeps the other side of the film to a coulometric detector. The detector measures the rate that oxygen comes through the film. The detector response at steady state can easily be converted to At (eq. 1). Simple... [Pg.499]

Aim3 aerobic bioprocess was operated in a continuous mode with nitrogen as the growth limiting nutrient. The steady state biomass concentration (x), the biomass yield coefficient (Yx/S) and the product yield coefficient (Yp/t) were determined at a low and at a high dilution rate (D). [Pg.48]

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is anaerobically grown in a continuous culture at 30°C. Glucose is used as substrate and ammonia as nitrogen source. A mixture of glycerol and ethanol is produced. At steady-state condition mass the flow rate is stated. The following reaction is proposed for the related bioprocess 4,6... [Pg.230]

In reality, many other chemical and photochemical processes take place leading to a sort of steady-state concentration of O3 which is a sensitive function of height. To be accurate, it is necessary to include the reactions of nitrogen oxides, chlorine- and hydrogen-containing free radicals (molecules containing an unpaired electron). However, occurrence of a layer due to the altitude dependence of the photochemical processes is of fundamental geochemical importance and can be demonstrated simply by the approach of Chapman (1930). [Pg.137]

Based solely on this relationship, it has been predicted that the ozone concentration should be about 2 pphm at solar noon in the United States. Indeed [7], in unpolluted environments, ozone concentrations are usually in the range of 2-5 pphm. However, in polluted urban areas, ozone concentrations can be as high as 50 pphm. Peroxy radicals formed from hydrocarbon emissions cause this enhanced ozone concentration. These radicals oxidize nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide, thereby shifting the above steady-state relationship to higher ozone levels. [Pg.470]

Transient kinetic experiments have also been carried out to complement the information deduced from the steady-state measurements [33], Systematic variations were observed during the transition from the clean surface to the steady-state catalytic regime that correlate well with the overall reaction rates in the latter. Specifically, there is a time delay in the production of molecular nitrogen because of the need to buildup a threshold of atomic nitrogen coverage on the surface. This atomic nitrogen coverage, which could... [Pg.73]

Perhaps the most extensive computational study of the kinetics of NO reactions on Rh and Pd surfaces has been provided by the group of Zgrablich. Their initial simulations of the NO + CO reaction on Rh(lll) corroborated the fact that the formation of N-NO intermediate is necessary for molecular nitrogen production [83], They also concluded that an Eley-Rideal mechanism is necessary to sustain a steady-state catalytic regime. Further simulations based on a lattice-gas model tested the role of the formation of... [Pg.87]

FRET-based nanosensors have been successfully used to monitor steady state levels of metabolites, nutrients, and ions in mammalian cells [74, 87], Recently FRET-based glucose, sucrose, and amino acid nanosensors have been developed to study the metabolism of glucose, sucrose, and amino acid uptake and metabolism in plant cells [80,89, 91]. The enormous potential of these nanosensors will be crucial for understanding ion (e.g., calcium), metabolite (e.g., sugars), hormone (e.g., auxins, gibberellins etc.), and nutrient (e.g., nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus) requirements and homeostasis in living plant tissues. [Pg.446]

For radiocarbon, the standard ratio s is provided by the preindustrial atmosphere, for which 8 = 0. Cosmic rays interacting with atmospheric nitrogen were the main source of preindustrial radiocarbon. In the steady state, this source drsource is just large enough to generate an atmospheric delta value equal to zero. The source appears in equation 9 for atmospheric radiocarbon. Its value, specified in subroutine SPECS, I adjust to yield a steady-state atmospheric delta value of 0. The source balances the decay of radiocarbon in the atmosphere and in all of the oceanic reservoirs. Because radiocarbon has an overall source and sink—unlike the phosphorus, total carbon, 13C, and alkalinity in this simulation—the steady-state values of radiocarbon do not depend on the initial values. [Pg.80]

To further test the model, calculations were performed to simulate the isotopic tracer experiments presented in Figs. 9 and 10. It should be noted that while the tracer experiments were performed at 438K, the rate coefficients used in the model were chosen to fit the experiments in which chemisorbed NO was reduced at 423 K. Figures 21 and 22 illustrate the nitrogen partial pressure and surface coverage responses predicted for an experiment in which 5 0 is substituted for l NO at the same time that H2 is added to the NO flow. Similar plots are shown in Figs. 23 and 24 for an experiment in which NO is substituted for during steady-state reduction. [Pg.132]
