These can be converted to their uranyl nitrate addition compounds. The crude or partially purified ester is saturated with uranyl nitrate solution and the adduct filtered off. It is recrystallised from -hexane, toluene or ethanol. For the more soluble members crystallisation from hexane using low temperatures (-40°) has been successful. The adduct is decomposed by shaking with sodium carbonate solution and water, the solvent is steam distilled (if hexane or toluene is used) and the ester is collected by filtration. Alternatively, after decomposition, the organic layer is separated, dried with CaCl or BaO, filtered, and fractionally distilled under high vacuum. [Pg.60]

Several additives were tested with a series of explosives in order to enhance ESI intensities [15—17]. Nitramine and nitrate ester explosives showed enhanced response for ammonium nitrate additive, by forming [M + NOs] adduct ions in the negative-ion mode. Nitrate adduct ions were more intense than trifluoroacetate (TFA) or chloride adduct ions by a factor of 6-40. The base peak in the negative-ion mass spectrum of TNT, with 1 mM ammonium nitrate in the mobile phase was at m/z 226 due to the [M-H] ion. [Pg.156]

Vanadium Nitrates.—No nitrates of vanadium have been isolated. When hypovanadic oxide is dissolved in nitric acid the blue solution which results probably contains vanadyl nitrate, V0(N03)2, but on evaporation oxidation ensues and hydrated vanadium pentoxide is obtained. Blue solutions of vanadyl nitrate arc more conveniently obtained by precipitating vanadyl chloride with silver nitrate or vanadyl sulphate with barium nitrate. In the dual-pressure process, low to medium pressure gases (0.3 to 0.6 MPa) containing nitrogen oxides are compressed to 1.1 to 1.5 MPa for efficient absorption in water to make nitric acid. Use of nitrate as an alternative electron acceptor for in situ treatment in an anaerobic biorestoration field demonstration project was reported by researchers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (54, 55). A shallow aquifer contaminated with jet fuel spill was the study site in which BTX removal by nitrate addition, along with other essential nutrients, was examined. Significant depletion of benzene, toluene, and m- and p-xylenes (but not o-xylene) were observed. Benzene loss was attributed to oxygen, whereas toluene and xylene losses appeared to be related to the nitrate and nutrient additions (54, 55). [Pg.230]
