Nitrate concentration

This experiment describes a semester-long project in which the concentration of several ions in a fresh water aquarium are monitored. Ions that are monitored using potentiometric electrodes include H+ (pH electrode), Gh (chloride electrode), HG03 (GO2 electrode), NH4+ (NH3 electrode), and N03 (NH3 electrode). The manufacture of silver nitrate for the preparation of photographic emulsions requires silver of very high purity. At the Eastman Kodak Company, the principal U.S. producer of silver nitrate, 99.95% pure silver bars are dissolved in 67% nitric acid in three tanks coimected in parallel. Excess nitric acid is removed from the resulting solution, which contains 60—65% silver nitrate, and the solution is filtered. This solution is evaporated until its silver nitrate concentration is 84%. It is then cooled to prepare the first crop of crystals. The mother Hquor is purified by the addition of silver oxide and returned to the initial stages of the process. The cmde silver nitrate is centrifuged and recrystallized from hot, demineralized water. Equipment used in this process is made of ANSI 310 stainless steel (16). [Pg.89]

Nitrate can also be measured potentiometrically with an ion-selective electrode at 10 10 M (24,25). This method is suggested as a screening method for determining the approximate nitrate concentration (20). Ion chromatography can be used for nitrate concentrations of 2 to 10 ppb (23). [Pg.231]

Two colorimetric methods are recommended for boron analysis. One is the curcumin method, where the sample is acidified and evaporated after addition of curcumin reagent. A red product called rosocyanine remains it is dissolved in 95 wt % ethanol and measured photometrically. Nitrate concentrations >20 mg/L interfere with this method. Another colorimetric method is based upon the reaction between boron and carminic acid in concentrated sulfuric acid to form a bluish-red or blue product. Boron concentrations can also be deterrnined by atomic absorption spectroscopy with a nitrous oxide—acetjiene flame or graphite furnace. Atomic emission with an argon plasma source can also be used for boron measurement. [Pg.231]

One test, made at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, " identified two areas of the UK in which the incidence of stomach cancer was particularly high and two in which it was particularly low. People attending hospitals in these areas as visitors rather than patients were asked to provide samples of saliva. The hypothesis suggested that samples from the high-risk areas should contain more nitrite and nitrate than those from the low-risk areas, but this was not so. The samples from the low-risk populations had nitrate concentrations 50% greater than those from the high-risk areas. [Pg.3]

Another test looked at nitrate concentrations in 229 urban areas in the UK between 1969 and 1973 and at deaths from stomach cancer in the same areas at the same time. The hypothesis suggested that there should be a positive relationship between them. The results showed a negative one. [Pg.3]

Although there are a few caveats that need to be noted about these tests, the results suggest strongly that there is no real link between stomach cancer and nitrate in water. Further support for this conclusion comes from the fact that, while nitrate concentrations have been increasing in water during the past 30 years, the incidence of stomach cancer has been declining, and about ten years ago the absence of any link was accepted officially. ... [Pg.3]

Cationic samples can be adsorbed on the resin by electrostatic interaction. If the polymer is strongly cationic, a fairly high salt concentration is required to prevent ionic interactions. Dissolved mineral salts The principal ions found in water are calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, sulphate, chloride and nitrate. A few parts per million of iron or manganese may sometimes be present and there may be traces of potassium salts, whose behaviour is very similar to that of sodium salts. From the corrosion point of view the small quantities of other acid radicals present, e.g. nitrite, phosphate, iodide, bromide and fluoride, have little significance. Larger concentrations of some of these ions, notably nitrite and phosphate, may act as corrosion inhibitors, but the small quantities present in natural waters will have little effect. In order to define the conditions of the growing cultures, buffered medium (VL) inoculated with E, coli ATCC 11775 and supplemented with nitrate, glucose and DMA was incubated at 37 C, and pH, nitrite concentration, nitrate concentration, cell growth and nitrosamine formation were followed (Fig. 1). We compared the gas chromatograms of nitrosamines in matching aliquots of mainstream smoke derived from Burley type cigarettes that were identical except for the degree of nitrate fertilization during cultivation (Figure 2).
