An important appHcation of MMCs in the automotive area is in diesel piston crowns (53). This appHcation involves incorporation of short fibers of alumina or alumina—siHca in the crown of the piston. Concentrations of nickel carbonyl as low as 30 ppm in air for 30 min may be lethal for humans. Another method that appears to have commercial potential is the ozonolysis of cyclooctene. Ozonolysis is carried out using a short chain carboxyHc acid, preferably propanoic acid, as solvent. The caustic potash is melted with a small quantity of water in a siheror nickel crucible. The temperature of the mass is brought to 150, and the finely powdered benzil added. The benzil melts, and the mixture shortly changes to a solid mass of potassium ben/ilatc. The cooled melt is dissolved in water, and the alkaline solution acidified with hydrochloric acid, which precipitates the benzilic acid. The crystalline mass, which contains small quantities of benzoic acid, is separated from the mother-liquor and washed with cold water. It is then transferred to a porcelain basin, dissolved in hot water, and the solution boiled until the smell of bcn/oic acid has gone. As early as 1990, Chauvin and his co-workers from IFP published their first results on the biphasic, Ni-catalyzed dimerization of propene in ionic liquids of the [BMIM]Cl/AlCl3/AlEtCl2 type [4]. An interesting example of judicious choice of braze filler is to be found in the selection of silver alloys for the brazing of stainless steels to be subsequently used in a tap-water environment . Although the brazed joint may appear to be quite satisfactory, after a relatively short exposure period failure of the joint occurs by a mechanism which appears to be due to the break-down of the bond between the filler and the base metal. Dezincifica-tion is a prominent feature of the phenomenon and zinc-free braze alloys based on the Ag-Cu system with the addition of nickel and tin have been found to inhibit this form of attack. A similar result is obtained by electroplating 0-007 mm of nickel over the joint area prior to brazing with a more conventional Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd alloy. [Pg.89]
