Fibers, short

A composite material (1) is a material consisting of two or more physically and/or chemically distinct, suitably arranged or distributed phases, generally having characteristics different from those of any components in isolation. Usually one component acts as a matrix in which the reinforcing phase is distributed. When the continuous phase or matrix is a metal, the composite is a metal-matrix composite (MMC). The reinforcement can be in the form of particles, whiskers, short fibers, or continuous fibers (see Composite materials). [Pg.194]

There are three kinds of metal-matrix composites distinguished by type of reinforcement particle-reinforced MMCs, short fiber- or whisker-reinforced MMCs, and continuous fiber- or sheet-reinforced MMCs. Table 1 provides examples of some important reinforcements used in metal-matrix composites as well as their aspect (length/diameter) ratios and diameters. [Pg.194]

The general range of values for particle-reinforced alurninum-type MMCs is between 15—30, whereas short fiber- or... [Pg.201]

An important appHcation of MMCs in the automotive area is in diesel piston crowns (53). This appHcation involves incorporation of short fibers of alumina or alumina—siHca in the crown of the piston. The conventional diesel engine piston has an Al—Si casting alloy with a crown made of a nickel cast iron. The replacement of the nickel cast iron by aluminum matrix composite results in a lighter, more abrasion resistant, and cheaper product. Another appHcation in the automotive sector involves the use of carbon fiber and alumina particles in an aluminum matrix for use as cylinder liners in the Prelude model of Honda Motor Co. [Pg.204]

Dry-Laid Pulp. A principal objective of using air to form webs from natural and synthetic fiber pulps is to produce relatively lofty, porous stmctures from short fibers, without using water. Early technical developments in air-laid pulp processing were made by Kroyer in Denmark. [Pg.151]

The bottom or wire side of the paper exhibits a more pronounced grain and a greater opeimess, which affects ink appearance on paper, because the wire side loses short fibers, paper si2ing, and filler through the wires. Although the wire side is usually not the preferred printing side, if both sides are to be printed, the characteristics of both sides need to be considered. [Pg.55]

Recycled paper contains more fines, short fibers, and anionic trash. This will increase demand for process chemicals such as drainage aids and both wet- and dry-strength additives (43). [Pg.9]

Asbestos fiber identification can also be achieved through transmission or scanning electron microscopy (tern, sem) techniques which are especially usefiil with very short fibers, or with extremely small samples (see Microscopy). With appropriate peripheral instmmentation, these techniques can yield the elemental composition of the fibers using energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence, or the crystal stmcture from electron diffraction, selected area electron diffraction (saed). [Pg.352]

Cellulose (qv) is one of nature s most abundant stmctural materials, providing the primary framework of most plants. For industrial purposes cellulose is derived from two primary sources, cotton linters and wood pulp. Linters are derived from the machine by the same name used for removing the short fibers adhering to cotton seeds after ginning and consist essentially of pure cellulose (see Cotton). Wood (qv), on the other hand, contains 40—60% cellulose, which must be extracted by the chemical degradation of the wood stmcture. [Pg.248]

Whisker and Short Fiber Composites. Whiskers and short fibers tend to align during forming, lea ding to anisotropic properties and large... [Pg.309]

The premise that discontinuous short fibers such as floating catalyst VGCF can provide structural reinforcements can be supported by theoretical models developed for the structural properties of paper Cox [36]. This work was recently extended by Baxter to include general fiber architecture [37]. This work predicts that modulus of a composite, E can be determined from the fiber and matrix moduli, Ef and E, respectively, and the fiber volume fraction, Vf, by a variation of the rule of mixtures,... [Pg.156]
