No histopathologic changes were observed in the adrenal, pancreas, pituitary, or parathyroid glands of male or female rats that were fed Aroclor 1016, 1242,1254, or 1260 for 24 months at dose levels of 8.0-11.2,4.0-5.7,4.3-6.1, or 4.1-5.8 mg/kg/day, respectively (Mayes et al. 1998). To confirm my hypothesis, I interviewed 30 of my peers—students from both the public and private high schools in my area. I asked, What do you think is the right relationship between work and play Twenty-two respondents said they think work and play should have equal time in our lives. We should play at least as much as we work, said Ellen Reese, a senior planning to major in computer science. Of course, that s a lot easier to do if you love your job, because then that s part of the play, too. Andrew Fry, a junior who wants to be a journalist, was one of the 12 respondents concerned with the collapsing distinction between work and home. Between e-mail and the Internet, wireless connections, and cell phones, we can take our work with us anywhere and work any time of the day. So many people bring their work home with them and let it eat up their play time. I think it s really important to set aside time each day, or at least each week, to relax and play. ...

In 1979, Saleh et al. studied the metabolism of B7-515 (P-32) and technical toxaphene in six mammals and chicken. Both were metabolized the least in chicken and the most in monkeys [175] B7-515 (P-32) was readily degraded, and three metabolites were formed. Two of them were B6-923 and B6-913, which were excreted with the feces [175]. Also, the octachlorobornanes B8-806/B8-809 (P-42) were metabolized by all test species, and highest degradation rates were found for monkeys [175]. A second feeding study of primates was conducted by Andrews et al. [202], B8-1413 (P-26), B9-1679 (P-50), B8-2229 (P-44), and B9-1025 (P-62) were identified as the most abundant toxaphene congeners in both blood and adipose tissue [202]. In blood an equilibrium level of approximately 40 ppb was reached after 10 weeks and in adipose tissue levels of ca. 4000 ppb after 15-20 weeks [202]. Different abundance ratios were found for GC/ECD and GC/NICI-MS, and GC/NICI-MS was considered as less suitable for this study [202].

In addition to eliciting a contact hypersensitivity response, benzo[a]pyrene has been shown to suppress this response, to other sensitizers. The effects of dermally applied benzo[a]pyrene (alone or following dermal pretreatment with the prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, indomethacin) on contact hypersensitivity (cell-mediated immunity), and production of antibodies to dinitrophenol (DNP) (humoral immunity) were studied in male BALB/c mice treated for 6 weeks to 6 months (Andrews et al. 1991a). A group of mice treated with acetone served as controls. Benzo[a]pyrene alone caused a significant reduction (p<0.01) in the contact hypersensitivity response to dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) as measured by increases in ear thickness when compared to the vehicle controls. However, indomethacin pretreatment prevented the benzo[a]pyrene-induced contact hypersensitivity response. Benzo[a]pyrene also reduced antibody titres to DNP in treated mice. This suppressive effect on humoral immune function was not restored by pretreatment with indomethacin. These findings led the authors to conclude that the mechanism of...

Zimakoff and colleagues pointed out the importance of reinfection on the transmission of Staphylococcus within families and concluded that a residual effect is desirable to help prevent reacquisition of staphylococci that are shed into the household environment on sheets, towels, etc. [28]. Recently in the United States, special occurrences affecting many households were shown to increase the incidence of skin infections. Quinn et al. reported on medical care of families affected by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 [29]. For 2 weeks following the storm there were noted increases in pediatric dermatological infections, including impetigo, wound infections, and cellulitis.
