Nerve applications

The first references to the use of microelectrodes appear in the biochemical literature and relate not to microvoltammetric electrodes, as will largely be considered here, but rather to very small ion-sensitive electrodes (particularly pH electrodes) capable of making measurements inside a single biological cell. Biochemists have also used metal microelectrodes to provide direct electrical stimulation of nerves, for example in the design of auditory protheses [1]. Indeed, the two types of electrode have often been used in combination, i.e. an ion-sensitive electrode is used to detect changes caused by the electrical stimulation of a nerve. Applications of both these types of... [Pg.150]

Besides being useful precursors to pyrroles pyridine-2-ones -4-ones, -4-thiones. and -4-imines 4-alkylidene-dihydropyridines thiophenes 1,2,4-triazoles thiapyrane-2-thiones, isoquinoline-3-ones isoben-zothiophenes and 4-mercaptoimidazolium hydroxide inner salts, mesoionic thiazoles are potentially useful in the construction of molecules with herbicidic (39). central nerve stimulating, and antiinflammatory properties (40,41). Application in dye synthesis has likewise been reported (42). [Pg.15]

The recent development and comparative application of modern separation techniques with regard to determination of alkylphosphonic acids and lewisite derivatives have been demonstrated. This report highlights advantages and shortcomings of GC equipped with mass spectrometry detector and HPLC as well as CE with UV-Vis detector. The comparison was made from the sampling point of view and separation/detection ability. The derivatization procedure for GC of main degradation products of nerve agents to determine in water samples was applied. Direct determination of lewisite derivatives by HPLC-UV was shown. Also optimization of indirect determination of alkylphosphonic acids in CE-UV was developed. Finally, the new instrumental development and future trends will be discussed. [Pg.278]

Twenty-four hours after application of 2.094 g TOCP labeled with radioactive phosphorus to a 15x20 cm area of clipped and depilated abdominal skin, radioactivity was detected in the following tissues in a dog, listed in order of decreasing concentration (counts per gram of tissue) skin and facia at site of application, liver, omental fat, blood, kidney, lung, muscle (triceps femoris), spinal cord, heart, spleen = brain = sciatic nerve, and bone (femur) (Hodge and Sterner 1943). [Pg.170]

No data are available on platelet NTE activity in exposed subjects, and little data on lymphocyte NTE activity. In one reported case of suicidal poisoning with chlorpyrifos, inhibition of lymphocyte NTE was correlated with the enzyme inhibition in peripheral nerves (Osterloh et al., 1983). In another case of attempted suicide with the same compound, inhibition of NTE in peripheral lymphocytes was associated with the development of delayed neuropathy (Lotti, 1986). However, the threshold of NTE inhibition required for delayed neuropathy remains undetermined (Lotti, 1987). Observations in occupationally exposed subjects are limited in number, and more research is needed to investigate the applicability of NTE as a biomarker of exposure to OP pesticides. [Pg.4]

Serosal application of serotonin, a neurotransmitter localized histochemi-cally in the corneal nerves, increases the intracellular levels of cAMP, thereby elevating secretory flux of CE, which accounts for all the elevation in the corneal 7SC [119], The effect of serotonin on 7SC is slower than that of epinephrine, oc-... [Pg.348]

This class of agents is not covered by the Chemical Weapons Convention. Because of the toxicity of the agents and lack of commercial application, carbamate nerve agents would be prohibited based on the Guidelines for Schedules of Chemicals. [Pg.105]
