Membranes ion current

These two basic mechanisms could provide a further classification for NTs, namely fast and slow acting, although one NT can work through both mechanisms using different receptors. The slow effects can also range from many milliseconds to seconds, minutes, hours or even to include longer trophic influences. What will become clear is that while one NT can modify a number of different membrane ion currents through different mechanisms and receptors, one current can also be affected by a number of different NTs. The control of neuronal excitability is discussed in more detail in Chapter 2. [Pg.15]

The results from such experiments indicate that membrane ion current is very dependent on molecular packing with respect to the other membrane parameters of Table I. This factor must be considered in any new design for development of a sensing device to ensure that substantial molecular mobility may be incorporated Into stabilized membranes. Such a stabilized, e1ectrochemica 1 1y active membrane has been produced by lipid monolayer deposition onto hydrated polyacrylamide gel, demonstrating that device fabrication may be possIb1e. [Pg.352]

They tested the effect of gambierol on taste buds from mouse vallate papilla by using the patch-clamp technique to monitor membrane ion currents. These excitable cells are believed to be sensory cells able to detect food chemicals, so alterations on the ionic currents produced by the toxin could affect the signal transduction and processing. [Pg.615]

What does all this mean for the sensor specialist who is interested in mediation of membrane ion currents by receptor-stimulant interactions There are two clear philosophies here. [Pg.180]

With respect to point 2, taking into consideration the theoretical discussion of the previous section, we can summarize the following possibilities for perturbation of membrane ion currents in a non-biochemical fashion (19) ... [Pg.180]
