National Composite Center

The gas analysis laboratory of the National Research Center for Certified Reference Materials (NRCCRM) is engaged in gas measurement at the state level. It is responsible for the uniformity of gas composition in China and for maintaining consistency and equivalence with international gas measurements. Our main tasks include research, development and maintenance of national primary reference materials research and establishment of precise reference methods for gas analysis to provide certified reference gas and working reference gas as well as permeation tubes for users to undertake the verification of gas analyzers and technical advisory services. The focus of our work is the development of research on gas analysis and measurement.

Other excellent summaries describing what is known of the formation processes and geological setting of these deposits have also been assembled (30—32). Listings of nodule compositions for these and other areas have been compiled (33,34). Eor many sites these data are available as computer databases (qv) maintained by the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center in Boulder, Colorado. 

Tonner et al. have taken scanning XPS microscopies at the Advanced Light Source Synchrotron Radiation Center of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory [2.6]. They investigated a polished and sputter-cleaned surface of mineral ilmenite with the nominal composition FeTi03, and used the Fe 3p and Ti 3p lines for imaging. Using synchrotron radiation they demonstrated spatial resolution of approximately 0.25 p,m.

Two Aroclor 1260 standards and A2) were included in these analyses. One standard was from the Columbia National Fisheries Research Laboratory, and the other from the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Laurel, MD.) A difference in the concentration of one constituent of about 30% was responsible for the small difference observed between the two Aroclor 1260 standards (Figure 5.) Use of a quantitative chemometric method to describe compositional residue differences measured in environmental samples may prove helpful in correlating residue profiles and concentrations with observed biological effects, such as decreased survival of young birds. 

The CSSX process flowsheet for the decontamination of high-level waste was demonstrated in a 33-stage, 2-cm contactor apparatus at the Savannah River National Laboratory (formerly the Savannah River Technology Center).107 Simulated SRS average waste, simulated Tank 37H/44F composite waste, and actual Tank 37H/44F composite high-level waste were processed in three tests lasting 6,12, and 48 hours, respectively.

A third example may be the quantification of complexity for biological sequences. This area has, of course, been widely investigated by many laboratories. Most closely related to our work is that being done at the National Center for Biotechnology Innovation at NIH. There, Wan and Woot-ton developed a compositional complexity measure for biological sequences in proteins and nucleotide sequences in terms of longest paths on the YDL (Wan and Wooton 2000). Patit P. Kundu is Professor in the Department of Polymer Science Technology at Calcutta University, India. He obtained his PhD in 1997 from IIT, Kharagpur, India. He has 67 research papers to his credit in international journals along with ten papers in national/international conferences, contributed 2 book chapters, and one patent. His research interest centers on the fields of synthesis and characterization of oil based rubber and nano-composites, microbial fuel cell, direct methanol fuel cell, microbial biodegradation of waste polyolefin fUm, tissue engineering and gene therapy.
