Name—year citations

The third ACS-approved approach to citing the literature is to use authors last names and year of publication (author name, year). This format is relatively uncommon in ACS journals but is frequently used in journals of other scientihc disciplines, such as Ecology and Reviews of Modern Physics. With the author—date citation technique, the authors last names, followed by a comma, a space, and the year of publication are placed in parentheses (or brackets in some journals). Publications with three or more authors are referred to by the last name of the first author, followed by et ah, a comma, and the year. Multiple citations are separated by semicolons and listed in alphabetical order (by first author). 

If the query provides thousands of hits, the analyze features are particularly advantageous. One method is to analyze the results by any of the criteria that arc listed, c.g., by language (default), author names, journals, puhlication year, and so on. If one specification is selected and the choice is modified, the hit list will be updated. A more specific analysis is available with the Refine" option. where the user has the opportunity to choose one of eight criteria (including the search topics above) with further individual input. Several refinements of the hit list can reduce the result to a concise list of literature. To read the abstract of an article, the microscope button (to the right of the citation) has to be pressed (Figure 5-15). 

All the references for all the chapters in a given volume are collected together in a merged list at the end of that volume (where they are most easily located). There are no separate chapter bibliographies. In the final list, references are given both in code and in full conventional form, with authors names. They appear in an ordered sequence, numerically by year, then alphabetically by journal code, and then by page number. Cross references to the text citation are also given in the reference list. 

A protein with the innocuous name p53 is one of the most frequently cited biological molecules in the Science Citation Index. The "p" in p53 stands for protein and "53" indicates a molecular mass of 53 kDa. The p53 protein plays a fundamental role in human cell growth and mutations in this protein are frequently associated with the formation of tumors. It is estimated that of the 6.5 million people diagnosed with one or another form of cancer each year about half have p53 mutations in their tumor cells and that the vast majority of these mutations are single point mutations. 

In the text of this book author name(s) and year are provided, but for references with three or more authors only the first author and et air is given. No initials are included in the citations within the text. For the (few) Ph. D. theses cited, the name of the supervisor is given at the end of the reference. 

Again, this same format holds true for electronic sources. When listing an author or editor of an online article simply alphabetize his or her name (last name first, etc.). Use the same procedure for multiple authors or editors. After you have done this, list the title of the article you consulted (in quotation marks), the journal in which it was published (underline the title), and instead of the publishing company, list the website and the year the site was posted. In other words, your bibliographic citation should look like this ... 

References to the literature. References to the original data are given in the text, as Washburn.2 The exact citation can then be found in the list of references, which are given in alphabetical (and numerical) order, as Washburn,2 Bur. Standards J. Research 10, 525 (1933), where the numerals indicate, respectively, the volume, page, and year. The abbreviations used for the titles of the periodicals are those adopted as standard by the International Union of Chemistry (See, for example, Chemical Abstracts List of Periodicals Abstracted ). When the citation is that of a book, it is written as Washburn, Introduction to the Principles of Physical Chemistry, McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York (1921), where the title is in quotation marks, and then in order follow the name of the publisher, the place of publication, and, in parentheses, the year of publication. If the book citation includes volume and page numbers, these follow immediately after the title. 

Beneath each volume number and year there appear all of the references to that volume that are given in these tables. These references are given in exactly the same form as is used in Table I and are listed in the order of their page numbers. The reference "AA036-050V is the only one that appears underneath volume 36 of Analytica Chimica Acta it lists the author s name as B. Fleet, and consequently the full citation is B. Fleet, Anal. Chim. 

Publications You should provide each publication as a separate PDF file. You should place in alphabetical order and into a single folder named pubs all publications that are cited in files contained in the admin folder. You should establish a hypertext link between the citation and the publication in the pubs folder. Place the pubs folder in the admin folder. You should include the citation for the publication in the Title portion of the Document Information field for each publication file. You should include the first author s last name, the year of the publication, and the title of the article in the citation.

The citation of references in text is a subject that varies widely from journal to journal and publisher to publisher. There are three ways to cite references in text in ACS publications superscript numbers, italic numbers in parentheses, or author name and year of publication. Authors are encouraged to check the... 

The reference citation for a journal article should include the name(s) of the author(s) the name of the journal the month, day, and year of publication volume and issue numbers and inclusive page numbers for the article. 

Data for a selection of chemistry software vendors are displayed in Figure 21. Shown are the total number of papers that mentioned the names of these companies in CJACS for the entire 12-year period, 1982—1993. At the top, with more than 200 papers each, are the three large modeling companies. Tripos, MSI, and BIOSYM. Note that MDL Information Systems ranks second after Tripos in terms of literature citations. Besides these big four, Serena Software, Chemical Design Ltd., and Cambridge Scientific Computing fall in a middle tier. There is also a fairly broad representation of other software companies receiving mention in the papers of the ACS journals. 

Fortunately our community became aware of the value of his contributions early enough. So in these last 10 years he could enjoy a little bit the recognition and the honors which he deserved, while he was already fighting his losing battle with cancer. There should have been more recognition, but that will be compensated by the long time during which chemists will read his name in textbooks and in citations. 

As the chapters do not constitute comprehensive reviews of the various topics, we have limited the number of references cited at the end of each chapter and have emphasized recent review articles. Additional up-to-date reviews are available on all the topics included in this book. In addition, some of the primary literature is cited within the body of the text by providing the name of one of the authors and the year in which the article was published. Using this system, readers should be able to find the original citations by searching an on-line database. 

By year-end 1963, ninety-one of the ninety-seven PAHs identified in MSS were reported in the published literature. Six PAHs, identified in MSS by Rodgman and Cook (3273), had not been reported publicly at that time. However, by 1970, identification in MSS of all but one (cholanthrene) of the ninety-seven had been reported. Despite the availability of such information, only eighteen MSS PAHs were discussed by the Advisory Committee in its 1964 Report to the U.S. Surgeon General, thirteen as mainstream CSC components and five as carbon black components (3999). The detailed discussion of so few MSS PAHs and citation of so few publications were done despite the fact the committee had been provided with a detailed Philip Morris monograph on tobacco and smoke composition, a monograph that listed sixty-one PAHs identified in tobacco smoke plus many pertinent published references to them (2939, 3262). The Advisory Committee did note, however, that twenty-seven other nontumorigenic PAHs—none specifically named—had been identified in tobacco smoke. The twenty-seven unnamed PAHs had to include several of those PAHs, for example, naphthalene. 

Remember, it will be up to you to assign the values. If you choose to use citations rather than violations, that is your decision. If you decide that crashes will remain at full value for three years that is also up to you. Just remember, what you establish will apply to all drivers. In the name of fairness you cannot establish a system that charges certain drivers extra. Also remember to include all negative behaviors. One of the problems with many tracking and measuring systems is they are one-dimensional. They look only at crashes or only at citations. You are trying to assess your drivers behavior, so you will want to use all components of their performance in yom system.
