Multidisciplinary work

As industrial R D moves forward in an increasingly interdisciplinary fashion, it will be important for the chemical industry to recognize this trend in its hiring procedures. If interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work is to be encouraged, industry will need to seek and hire people who have worked at the intersections of chemistry and chemical engineering with biology, physics, and other sciences. 

Hormone signaling was one of the original fields of study that required working at the chemistry-biology interface, and it will continue to need people trained in multidisciplinary work to unravel many big questions facing the field. The topics described... 

Yet another example of multidisciplinary work in this project was the development of the mechanical device itself, where the main idea was turned over to mechanical engineers and industrial designers to design the first prototypes. An expert in materials sciences soon joined these people to look at biocompatibility and reliability issues. This section was under the supervision of the principal scientist, who had a doctorate in bioengineering. In this section of the project it became evident that expertise was needed from all fronts. 

All this multidisciplinary work must involve the manufacturer, security managers, occupational physicians, direct technical hierarchy, and of course users. AU these considerations should not exempt from making, in addition, a practical training before using chosen gloves. 

To achieve success it is vitally important that basic scientists, spectroscopists, biologists and clinicians are able to communicate effectively and understand each other s requirements and challenges. Adequate resources are fundamental to any project, but even more so to a well-functioning health and safety program. Many mishaps have been traced to improperly trained workers, lack of adequate tools and equipment, or requirements for personnel to work excessive hours or at unfamiliar jobs because of inadequate staffing or lack of adequate resources. The multidisciplinary team approach can help to identify required resources and can help balance, identify, and coordinate necessary assets. 

A multidisciplinary approach is another term for a cross-functional team or a project team. Such teams comprise representatives from each line and staff department so that decisions are taken close to the development work by those who will need to implement the decisions or verify their implementation. Such teams facilitate communication and overcome delays that often occur when reliant upon line-staff relationships. The oxidative degradation of organic pollutants in water and air streams is considered as one of the so-called advanced oxidation processes. Photocatalytic decomposition of organics found widespread industrial interest for air purification (e.g., decomposition of aldehydes, removal of NO , ), deodorization, sterilization, and disinfection. Domestic applications based on Ti02 photocatalysts such as window self-cleaning, bathroom paints that work under illumination with room light, or filters for air conditioners operating under UV lamp illumination have already been commercialized. Literature-based information on the multidisciplinary field of photocatalytic anti-pollutant systems can be found in a number of publications, such as Bahnemann s [237, 238] (and references therein). 

Over the subsequent three decades I have often wondered whether there would not be an alternative road to enter the bioEPR field for those of us, like myself, who choose to work in an intrinsically multidisciplinary area such as biochemistry (or microbiology, coordination chemistry, medical chemistry, et cetera) where some practical and theoretical knowledge is required on a broad range of advanced methods and instrumentation. Could one envision a way to short-cut the unpractically time-consuming requirement to work one s way through the physics of EPR without... 

Successful development of fibre optic chemical sensors requires the cooperation of many specialists in various fields of science. Scientists in analytical chemistry, polymer science, material science, optoelectronics and electronics etc. can be involved in this multidisciplinary task. Depending on the application of the sensor biologists, medical doctors or environmentalists can also be incorporated to the working group. Although, the contribution of all specialists cannot be classified by the importance, analytical chemistry and material science seem to be the key to the success. 

Allelopathy is newly emerging multidisciplinary field of agricultural research. A lot of allelopathy research work has been done in various fields of agriculture and plant sciences. However, standard methods are not being used by workers due to lack of a compendium on the techniques, and hence the results obtained are not easily comparable with each other. This causes problems to researchers working in underdeveloped / third world countries in small towns, where library and research facilities are not available. Therefore, to make available the standard methods for conducting allelopathy research work, this multi-volume book has been planned, with one volume each for each discipline. In all the conferences held since 1990 s a need has always been felt for a manual on allelopathy research methods. This book series aims to provide basic information about various methods to research workers, so that they can conduct research independently without the requirement of sophisticated equipments. The methods have been described in a simple way just like a DO IT YOURSELF book. 

To solve and at the same time to deeply understand the quite complicated and multidisciplinary task of lield-effect-based DNA biosensors, many disciplines and research fields, scientists from bio- and electrochemistry, biophysics, device engineering, and analytics should work hand in hand.
