Mixed constructions

Almost all common metals and structural steels are liable to corrode in seawater. Regulations have to be followed in the proper choice of materials [16], In addition, there is a greater risk of corrosion in mixed constructions consisting of different metals on account of the good conductivity of seawater. The electrochemical series in seawater (see Table 2-4), the surface area rule [Eq. (2-44)] and the geometrical arrangement of the structural components serve to assess the possibility of bimetallic corrosion (see Section 2.2.4.2 and Ref. 17). Moreover the polarization resistances have considerable influence [see Eq. (2-43)]. The standards on bimetallic corrosion provide a survey [16,17]. [Pg.395]

In 1987 at the Weira River, four Kaplan turbines of 2.65 m diameter in two power stations were cathodically protected. The turbines were of mixed construction with high-alloy CrNi steels and nonalloyed ferrous materials with tar-EP coating. Considerable corrosion damage occurred prior to the introduction of cathodic protection, which was attributed to bimetallic corrosion and the river s high salt content of c(CT) = 0.4 to 20 g L... [Pg.470]

Many mixed constructions occur because the writer is in too much of a hurry check your rough drafts carefully to see if you have included sentences in which you started one pattern and switched to another. Throughout all these phases, obviously, all necessary quality-control actions should be undertaken to obtain a product that fits the specifications. Since a number of individuals work on any phase of the project (e. g. design, mixing, construction and maintenance), quality control is of primary importance in order to correctly attribute the responsibility for the quality of the product. [Pg.204]

In the range of medium reaction velocities, mixed constructions are the ideal solution, for example special column trays with large holdup or reactor cascades with a column on the first stage only. [Pg.46]

More information regarding the mix design, the mix construction methods, testing and methods of measurement and payment are given in the relevant reference. [Pg.268]

Ellen MacArthur, who became the fastest woman circumnavigator in Kingfisher, an 18 m raceboat, utilized carbon fiber/Nomex for hull and deck, Kevlar skinned cfrp frame for the blister cabin, mast and deck spreaders molded in HM cfrp and a cfrp boom, emphasizing the advantages of mixed construction. [Pg.987]

An optimal combination between aerodynamic and weight requirements was achieved for the Transrapid by modular hybrid (mixed) construction methods. For example, the glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GRP) front module is designed for maintaining aerodynamic pressure as well as for stability under cross wind forces of 500 km/h, and is bonded to the front of the aluminium structure of the rail cars with Sikaflex products (Fig. 5). [Pg.359]

In waste water installations, the mixed construction i.e. the installation of components made of different materials, cannot be avoided. The risk of corrosion in mixed constructions is also discussed in [37]. [Pg.304]

If the problem is dominated by equipment with a single specification (i.e., a single material of construction, equipment type, and pressure rating), then the capital cost target can be calculated from Eq. (7.21) with the appropriate cost coefficients. However, if there is a mix of specifications, such as different streams requiring different materials of construction, then the approach must be modified. [Pg.229]

Equation (F.l) shows that each stream makes a contribution to total heat transfer area defined only by its duty, position in the composite curves, and its h value. This contribution to area means also a contribution to capital cost. If, for example, a corrosive stream requires special materials of construction, it will have a greater contribution to capital cost than a similar noncorrosive stream. If only one cost law is to be used for a network comprising mixed materials of construction, the area contribution of streams requiring special materials must somehow increase. One way this may be done is by weighting the heat transfer coefficients to reflect the cost of the material the stream requires. [Pg.447]

As the safety and quality of industrial components, equipments and constructions is correlated with the inspection sensitivity and this is influenced in radiography by the film system class, a continuous supervision of the film systems on the market seems to be urgently necessary. To support the confidence of the film users in the film properties specified by the film manufacturers such a system for quality assurance for industrial x-ray films is proposed by some manufacturers and BAM. This system will be open to all manufacturers, distributers and users of x-ray films. It will deal with all film systems inclusive those which are not specified by a manufacturer as for instance mixed systems. The system for quality assurance will be based... [Pg.552]

It is instructive for the student to construct a rough melting point diagram (compare Section 1,13 and Fig. 1,12, 1) for mixtures of cinnamic acid and urea. Weigh out 1 00 g. each of the two finely powdered components, and divide each into ten approximately equal portions on a sheet of clean, smooth paper. Mix 4 portions of cinnamic acid (A) with 1 portion of urea B) intimately with the aid of a spatula on a glass slide, and determine the melting point (the temperature at which the mixture just becomes completely fluid is noted). Repeat the procedure for 3 parts of A and 2 parts oiB 2 parts of A and 3 parts of B and 1 part of A and 4 parts of B. Tabulate your results as follows —... [Pg.230]

A schematic illustration of a typical inlet apparatus for separating volatile hydrides from the analyte solution, in which they are generated upon reduction with sodium tetrahydroborate. When the mixed analyte solution containing volatile hydrides enters the main part of the gas/liquid separator, the volatiles are released and mix with argon sweep and makeup gas, with which they are transported to the center of the plasma. The unwanted analyte solution drains from the end of the gas/liquid separator. The actual construction details of these gas/liquid separators can vary considerably, but all serve the same purpose. In some of them, there can be an intermediate stage for removal of air and hydrogen from the hydrides before the latter are sent to the plasma. [Pg.100]

Other Cells. Other methods to fabricate nickel—cadmium cell electrodes include those for the button cell, used for calculators and other electronic de dces. Tliis cell, the construction of which is illustrated in Figure is commonly made using a pressed powder nickel electrode mixed with graphite that is similar to a pocket electrode. Tlie cadmium electrode is made in a similar manner. Tlie active material, graphite blends for the nickel electrode, are ahnost the same as that used for pocket electrodes, ie, 18% graphite. [Pg.550]
