We now study some special examples that are closely related to those that we are interested in. 

Esters are commonly regarded as unreactive toward addition of alkyl radicals [120]. Recently, two studies have demonstrated that this may not be true. In the first, somewhat special, example, the addition of a benzylic radical to the carbonyl group of butenolides was observed during the preparation of potential novel /3-lactam antibiotics (Scheme 29) [118]. 

Heteroaryl groups are present in the 4-pyridyl-ethynyl compounds81,99,100 and their extended variants with C=C-C6H4-C=C-pyr-4 ligands.81,99 These compounds can be quaternized with Mel or coordinated to a metal complex at their terminal pyridyl functions to give species addressed as molecular rods or molecular wires.81,99 Similar reactions were carried out with 3-phenanthrolinyl-ethynyl complexes,62 and special examples are also known with R based on calixarenes.51... 

Addition products of the 1,4-type are only formed in some special examples. In the addition of benzene to allene the bicyclo[2.2.2]octane is the major product (4.43)448). 

A special example for a regioselective hydrogenation in ionic liquids was reported by our group and by DrieRen-Holscher [96, 97]. Thus, homoaromaticity is a special example of energy-lowering homoconjugation in which delocalization through space leads to a closed cyclic array of (An + 2) electrons. 

Molsidomine (8.159, Fig. 8.18), a very special example of a carbamate prodrug that acts by vascular smooth muscle relaxation, is an anti-angina agent effective mainly in the treatment of myocardial ischemia [207], Molsidomine undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis in the liver to form the imine 8.160 (Fig. 8.18) [208]. This metabolite is inactive and unstable, breaking down spontaneously to the A-nitroso secondary metabolite known as Sinl A (8.161, Fig. 8.18). The latter was found to be active, but there are reasons to believe that it acts by releasing nitrogen monoxide in the form of nitroxyl (HNO), which dissociates to the nitroxide ion NO, i. e., the reduced form of NO. 

A special example, in which tertiary amine groups are introduced via 3,3 -imi-nobis(N,iV-dimethylpropylamine) [22] is illustrated in Fig. 19. 

A very special example is shown in Scheme 35 with the formation of bisglucosylcarbodiimides (61) from 2-azidoglucose via an aza-Wittig reaction with CO2 or CS2. Subsequent addition of water affords bisglucosyl ureas (62) (64AG227). Further examples for the syntheses of carbodiimides are presented in Section VI. 

The free-radical crosslinking polymerization can be regarded as a special example of specific diffusion control, in which the tendency to microgel formation and decrease of apparent reactivity of Internal double bonds depends on the size of the mlcrogel which in turn depends on the molecular weight of the primary chain. Polymerization of diallyl monomers exhibits much less of these features (W) because the degree of polymerization of their primary chains is extremely low due to degradative chain transfer. 

These alloy catalysts merely represent a special example. It shows, however, that the systematic variation of catalysts of a fixed chemical nature and of a known physical structure may throw some new light on the nature of the activation process. It may be hoped that in catalysts other than metals similar variations may yield similar information, and that such knowledge may be applied in the future to phase boundary promotion and, quite generally, to the understanding of the individual values of activation energies. 

In this section, emphasis is placed on reactions which are characteristic of the ring systems present and do not depend on the presence of particular substituents. In addition, the well-known and widely applied behavior of morpholine as a basic and nucleophilic secondary amine is not covered and neither is the aniline-like nucleophilic and basic behavior of dihydrobenzoxazines save for a few special examples. 

A remarkable number of organic compounds luminesce when subjected to consecutive oxidation-reduction (or reduction-oxidation) in aprotic solvents1-17 under conditions where anion radicals are oxidized or cation radicals are reduced. In many instances, the emission is identical with that of the normal solution fluorescence of the compound employed. In these instances the redox process has served to produce neutral molecules in an excited electronic state. These consecutive processes which result in emission are not special examples of oxidative chemiluminescence, but are more properly classified as electron transfer luminescence in solution since the sequence oxidation-reduction can be as effective as reduction-oxidation.8,10,12 A simple molecular orbital diagram, although it is a zeroth-order approximation of what might be involved under some conditions, provides a useful starting...

In this chapter we consider theories of scattering by particles that are either inhomogeneous, anisotropic, or nonspherical. No attempt will be made to be comprehensive our choice of examples is guided solely by personal taste. First we consider a special example of inhomogeneity, a layered sphere. Then we briefly discuss anisotropic spheres, including an exactly soluble problem. Isotropic optically active particles, ones with mirror asymmetry, are then considered. Cylindrical particles are not uncommon in nature—spider webs, viruses, various fibers—and we therefore devote considerable space to scattering by a right circular cylinder.

Ruthenium-catalysed Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) 29 526 529 (Equation 10) and Pd(tppms)3-catalysed synthesis of water soluble poly-(p-phenylene) derivatives (Equation ll).530 The latter is a special example of a Suzuki coupling (see earlier). 

Eventually, the articles are formed into microporous sheets or films. Such microporous sheets and films may be used as labels, diffusion membranes, and separators in electrochemical devices, e.g., batteries, capacitors, and fuel cells. Special examples for formulations are presented in the literature (35). 

Special examples involving these boundary conditions have been worked out and it appeared that a systematic expansion in O 1/2 again led to the Fokker-Planck equation with higher order corrections.16 However, a general theory has not yet been developed.
