Petroleum and Goal. The alkanolarnines have found wide use in the petroleum industry. The ethanolamines are used as lubricants and stabilizers in drilling muds. Reaction products of the ethan olamines and fatty acids are used as emulsion stabilizers, chemical washes, and bore cleaners (168). Oil recovery has been enhanced through the use of ethan olamine petroleum sulfonates (169—174). OH—water emulsions pumped from wells have been demulsifted through the addition of triethanolarnine derivatives. Alkanolarnines have been used in recovering coal in aqueous slurries and as coal—oil mix stabilizers (175—177). [Pg.11]

Another series of pyrroles, structurally related to amino acids, was obtained in a microwave-assisted solvent-free condensation of a-amino acid methyl esters with chloroenones, which provided the four-carbon unit of the pyrrole. The reaction was carried out by mixing the reagents on silica gel and irradiating for 2-6 min inside a multimode microwave cavity (Scheme 7). The authors reported higher yields and cleaner products when microwaves were used instead of conventional heating [34],... [Pg.219]

Read the labels before mixing household cleansers. Many toilet-bowl cleaners contain acidic solutions, as do some drain cleaners, rust removers, and, of course, vinegar. Never mix bleach with these products. You could sustain permanent lung damage. [Pg.94]

While some drain cleaners contain concentrated sulfuric acid, many more contain sodium hydroxide. Mixing these two chemicals will not release chlorine gas, but the reaction between them does release a great amount of heat. Someone who makes the mistake of trying to undog their sink with one product and then switches to a different drain cleaner when the first does not clear the drain fast enough could create enough steam to blast the whole corrosive mess out of the sink right into their face. [Pg.94]

The waste milk in dairy wastewaters mostly comes from start-up and shut-down operations performed in the high-temperature, short-time pasteurization process. This waste is pure milk raw material mixed with water. Another wastewater of the dairy sector originates from equipment and tank-cleaning wastewaters. These waste streams contain waste milk and sanitary cleaners that are the principal waste constituents of dairy wastewater. Over time, milk waste degrades to form corrosive lactic and formic acids. Approximately 90% of a dairy s wastewater load is milk. [Pg.1237]

Exposures have occurred through the mixing of acid and basic drain cleaners, and through the use of acid drain cleaner to remove sludge-clogged drains, but these incidents have been rare (Oderda 1975). [Pg.147]

Mix the Liquid Citric Acid-50% with an equal volume of water. Slowly add the ammonium hydroxide solution. The neutralization should be done cautiously and under agitation, as the reaction is exothermic. Add Cellosolve, surfactant, remaining water, fragrance and dye. The formula is suitable for a pump spray. Bathtub, sinks, faucets and other hard surfaces should be sprayed from a distance of about 10 inches. For maximum effectiveness, the deposited cleaner fluid should be left at work for at least five minutes and then rinsed off with water or removed with a wet cloth or sponge. [Pg.3]

Consider the following neutralization reaction. Hydrochloric acid, HCl, is a common household and laboratory acid. Muriatic acid is the common household name of hydrochloric acid. It is often sold in hardware stores to be used in masonry work to remove excess mortar from brick. Sodium hydroxide, NaOH, is a common household and laboratory base. The common name of sodium hydroxide is lye. It is the primary component of many drain cleaners. Figure 15.1 shows litmus tests before and after mixing these substances together. [Pg.516]

Do you want to know why bleach bottles have a warning label that tells you not to mix the bleach with acidic cleaning agents, such as toilet bowl cleaners The explanation is in Special Topic 5.5 below. [Pg.188]
