Venturi scrubbers are similar in that they need high velocity to achieve small droplets. They are primarily employed for mist and dust collection and are discussed further in the mist-collection portion of this section.

Fiber-Bed Scrubbers Fibrous-bed structures are sometimes used as gas-liquid contactors, with cocnrrent flow of the gas and hqnid streams. In such contactors, both scrubbing (particle deposition on droplets) and filtration (particle deposition on fibers) may take place. If only mists are to be collected, small fibers may be used, but if solid particles are present, the use of fiber beds is limited by the tendency of the beds to phig. Mist eliminators are widely used in air polluhon control systems to prevent free moisture from entering the atmosphere. Usually, such mist eliminators are found downstream from wet scrubbers. The recovered mist is returned to the liquid system, resulhng in lowered liquid makeup requirements. 

A widely used type of scrubber for mists and droplets is the venturi scrubber. It has been used for the collection of sulfuric acid and phosphoric add mists with very high effidency. The scrubbing contact is made at the... 

Sonic agglomerators, which have been used experimentally for sulfuric acid mists and as mist eliminators. Commercial development is not projected at this time because the energy requirements are considerably greater than those for venturi scrubbers of similar capacity.

Table 8 provides a list of pollution prevention practices for reducing air emissions in mini steel mills. Standard treatment technologies for air emissions are as follows. Dust emission control technologies include cyclones, baghouses, and ESPs. Scrubbers are used to control acid mists. 

Condensation scrubbing is a relatively recent development in wet scrubber technology. Most conventional scrubbers rely on the mechanisms of impaction and diffusion to achieve contact between the PM and liquid droplets. In a condensation scrubber, the PM act as condensation nuclei for the formation of droplets. Generally, condensation scrubbing depends on first establishing saturation conditions in the gas stream. Once saturation is achieved, steam is injected into the gas stream. The steam creates a condition of supersaturation and leads to condensation of water on the fine PM in the gas stream. The large condensed droplets are then removed by one of several conventional devices, such as a high efficiency mist eliminator.

If your facilrty has several pieces of equipment performing a similar service, you may combine the reporting for such equipment on a single line. It is not necessary to enter four lines of data to cover four scrubber units, for example, if all four are treating wastes of similar character (e.g., sulfuric acid mist emissions), have similar influent concentrations, and have similar removal efficiencies. If, however, any of these parameters differ from one unit to the next, each scrubber must be listed separately. 

The discharge of copious quantities of chemicals directly to the atmosphere can give rise to secondary hazards, especially if the materials are toxic and can form a flammable atmosphere (e.g., vapor or mist) in air. In such cases, the provision of a knockout device (scrubber, dump tank) of adequate size to contain the aerated/foaming fluid is required. 

Commonly, amine absorbers include an integral gas. scrubber section in the bottom of the tower. This scrubber would be the same diameter as required for the tower. The gas entering the tower would have to pass through a mist eliminator and then a chimney tray. The purpose of this scrubber is to remove entrained water and hydrocarbon liquids from the gas to protect the amine solution from contamination. 

Vessel is final scrubber in a flare, relief, or vent system, is designed to withstand maximum built-up back-pressure, and has no internal or external obstructions, such as mist extractors, back-pressure valves, or flame arrestors. 

Steam scrubbers These use flow reversal in conjunction with a large contact surface area to remove BW mist from steam. 

Exhaust conditioning requires a precise identification of all the gases and liquids, both residual precursors and by-products. It also requires leak-tight piping and ducts, and suitable mechanical and chemical scrubbers to remove or neutralize dangerous materials and the proper venting of the mechanical pump with a stainless exhaust filter to remove oil mist at the source.
