Miscible processes are aimed at recovering oil which would normally be left behind as residual oil, by using a displacing fluid which actually mixes with the oil. Many examples are known, however, in which the liquids are partially miscible with one another. If the substance is found to be far too soluble in one solvent and much too insoluble in another solvent to allow of satisfactory recrystallisation, mixed solvents or solvent pairs may frequently be used with excellent results. The two solvents must, of course, be completely miscible. Recrystallisation from mixed solvents is carried out near the boiling point of the solvent. The compound is dissolved in the solvent in which it is very soluble, and the hot solvent, in which the substance is only sparingly soluble, is added cautiously until a slight turbidity is produced. Sprays. Aerosol spray emulsions are of the water-in-oil type. The preferred propellant is a hydrocarbon or mixed hydrocarbon—hydrofluorocarbon. About 25 to 30% propellent, miscible with the oil, remains in the external phase of the emulsion. When this system is dispensed, the propellant vaporizes, leaving behind droplets of the w/o emulsion (Fig. 2b). A vapor tap valve, which tends to produce finely dispersed particles, is employed. Lead borate moaohydrate [14720-53-7] (lead metaborate), Pb(B02)2 H20, mol wt 310.82, d = 5.6g/cm (anhydrous) is a white crystalline powder. The metaborate loses water of crystallization at 160°C and melts at 500°C. It is iasoluble ia water and alkaHes, but readily soluble ia nitric and hot acetic acid. Lead metaborate may be produced by a fusion of boric acid with lead carbonate or litharge. It also may be formed as a precipitate when a concentrated solution of lead nitrate is mixed with an excess of borax.
