This method of data collection uses Portable Document Format (PDF) Forms. This approach is flexible and inexpensive. A number of commercial software packages such as Adobe Acrobat, LaText, and Microsoft Word and free software such as Python and R are used to create the PDF forms. Paper copies of the PDF forms may be used as an intermediate data collection. Electronic versions are completed at each site with Adobe Reader software. Completed forms are submitted on a CD or faxed as Extended Markup Language (XML)... 

Current computerized analyses of adverse events still typically consist of a vast number of discrete, often personal, ad hoc processes that mimic paper and pencil methods. Some commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat , Microsoft Word , Excel ) do have the capability to search for specihc terms in electronic documents/case reports and do have navigational tools with hyperlinks and fullfull-text indexing that enable researchers to create their own hyperlinks. Some other COTS software tools (e.g., SAS , Excel , Access , IMP ) allow importation of electronic case report tabulations (ECRT) for more detailed analysis. 

Where does one begin and what are the tools required to publish a study in PDF format Actually, the process can be relatively simple from the standpoint of a single study. The minimal tools required are Adobe Acrobat, Version 4.0 or later (Adobe Systems), and... 

Adobe Acrobat Reader is software that permits users to view, navigate, search, and print Adobe PDF tiles on major computer platforms. The software is free and available from Adobe Systems Web site. Although useful, the Reader does not support all the functionality that OPP s reviewers require. For the pilots, OPP purchased Adobe Acrobat, Version 4.0, to support the review of studies submitted as PDF files. Adobe Acrobat permits review, mark-up, annotation, and extraction of text and tables for editing or other manipulations, in addition to basic viewing, navigation, and printing capabilities. 

If you need to repeatedly regenerate your PDF file, as is often the case in clinical trial reporting, it is easier to integrate PostScript files into a single PDF file with an automated scripted process such as the one listed above. Integrating multiple PDF files into a single PDF file is possible, but it is a manual process within Adobe Acrobat. 

Some software applications that you may use for reporting clinical trial information have their own scripting languages. For Microsoft Office applications you can write powerful local utility functions with Visual Basic or VBScript. Other applications, such as Adobe Acrobat, may use JavaScript for utility functions.

Full-Text Index for the Submission. You should provide an index of the full text and the Document Information fields of all items in the submission. The index is generated in PDF by using Acrobat Catalog. Name the index definition file indindex.pdx. You should place all associated index hies in a folder named indindex. Place the indindex.pdx definition hie and the indindex folder in the IND main folder. Associate the XXXX indtoc.pdf Ie with the index hie so that, whenever the TOC hie is opened, the associated index is automatically added to the available index list. This will facilitate the use of the search function in Adobe Acrobat. The function enables a reviewer to enter a specihc word and search the document for that word s location throughout the documents covered by the indices loaded at the time. The indindex folder and hie do not have numerical prehxes because they are intended to be cumulative. Index information should be updated each time an amendment is submitted to the IND. 

Protocol and Protocol Revisions (amendments) You should provide each protocol in a separate PDF file in a subfolder labeled Protocols. To help us easily identify the file, use the protocol number as part of the file name. Each protocol should have a TOC. You should hypertext link and bookmark the TOC. For protocol revisions or amendments, you should use the same protocol number that identifies the original protocol. You should submit to tie file a complete copy of any revised protocol. This will facilitate the use of the text compare function in Adobe Acrobat by our clinical reviewers.
