Transition metal catalysts, specifically those composed of iron nanoparticles, are widely employed in industrial chemical production and pollution abatement applications [67], Iron also plays a cracial role in many important biological processes. Iron oxides are economical alternatives to more costly catalysts and show activity for the oxidation of methane [68], conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide [58], and the transformation of various hydrocarbons [69,70]. In addition, iron oxides have good catalytic lifetimes and are resistant to high concentrations of moisture and CO which often poison other catalysts [71]. Li et al. have observed that nanosized iron oxides are highly active for CO oxidation at low tanperatures [58]. Iron is unique and more active than other catalyst and support materials because it is easily reduced and provides a large number of potential active sites because of its highly disordered and defect rich structure [72, 73]. Previous gas-phase smdies of cationic iron clusters have included determination of the thermochemistry and bond energies of iron cluster oxides and iron carbonyl complexes by Armentrout and co-workers [74, 75], and a classification of the dissociation patterns of small iron oxide cluster cations by Schwarz et al. The materials containing La or Ba exhibit high resistance to sintering and maintain a large surface area after calcination. Moreover, the crystal phase of alumina remains unchanged. Nevertheless, Ba and La, which have a strong effect on the thermal stability of alumina material, negatively affect the catalytic properties of supported Pd catalysts in complete oxidation of methane. The conversion of methane over supported Pd catalyst is lower when the support is modified by addition of rare-earth species. [Pg.195]

The conversion of coal to gas on an industrial scale dates to the early nineteenth century (14). The gas, often referred to as manufactured gas, was produced in coke ovens or similar types of retorts by simply heating coal to vaporize the volatile constituents. Estimates based on modem data indicate that the gas mixture probably contained hydrogen (qv) (ca 50%), methane (ca 30%), carbon monoxide (qv) and carbon dioxide (qv) (ca 15%), and some inert material, such as nitrogen (qv), from which a heating value of approximately 20.5 MJ/m (550 Btu/fT) can be estimated (6). [Pg.62]

Methane. As our most abundant hydrocarbon, methane offers an attractive source of raw material for organic chemicals (see Hydrocarbons). Successful commercial processes of the 1990s are all based on the intermediate conversion to synthesis gas. Direct conversion of methane to ethane and ethylene (C2 hydrocarbons) has a large implication towards the utilization of natural gas in the gas-based petrochemical and liquid fuels industries [ 1 ]. CO2 OCM process provides an alternative route to produce useful chemicals and materials where the process utilizes CO2 as the feedstock in an environmentally-benefiting chemical process. Carbon dioxide rather than oxygen seems to be an alternative oxidant as methyl radicals are induced in the presence of oxygen. Basicity, reducibility, and ability of catalyst to form oxygen vacancies are some of the physico-chemical criteria that are essential in designing a suitable catalyst for the CO2 OCM process [2]. The synergism between catalyst reducibility and basicity was reported to play an important role in the activation of the carbon dioxide and methane reaction [2]. [Pg.213]

In the phosphoric acid fuel cell as currently practiced, a premium (hydrogen rich) hydrocarbon (e.g. methane) fuel is steam reformed to produce a hydrogen feedstock to the cell stack for direct (electrochemical) conversion to electrical energy. While alkane metathesis is noteworthy, it affords lower homologues and especially methane, which cannot be used easily as a building block for basic chemicals. The reverse reaction, however, which would incorporate methane, would be much more valuable. Nonetheless, the free energy of this reaction is positive, and it is 8.2 kj/mol at 150 °C, which corresponds to an equihbrium conversion of 13%. On the other hand, thermodynamic calculation predicts that the conversion can be increased to 98% for a methane/propane ratio of 1250. The temperature and the contact time are also important parameters (kinetic), and optimal experimental conditions for a reaction carried in a continuous flow tubiflar reactor are as follows 300 mg of [(= SiO)2Ta - H], 1250/1 methane/propane mixture. Flow =1.5 mL/min, P = 50 bars and T = 250 °C [105]. After 1000 min, the steady state is reached, and 1.88 moles of ethane are produced per mole of propane consmned, which corresponds to a selectivity of 96% selectivity in the cross-metathesis reaction (Fig. 4). The overall reaction provides a route to the direct transformation of methane into more valuable hydrocarbon materials. [Pg.184]

When the temperature of a carbonate reservoir that is saturated with high-viscosity oil and water increases to 200° C or more, chemical reactions occur in the formation, resulting in the formation of considerable amounts of CO2. The generation of CO2 during thermal stimulation of a carbonate reservoir results from the dealkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of water vapor, catalytic conversion of hydrocarbons by water vapor, and oxidation of organic materials. Clay material and metals of variable valence (e.g., nickel, cobalt, iron) in the carbonate rock can serve as the catalyst.
