Metals Maintenance

Maintenance of metals is done to avoid corrosion which is defined as destructive and unintentional attack. The problem of metallic corrosion is one of significant proportions in economic terms, it has been estimated that approximately 5% of an industrialised nation s income is spent on corrosion prevention and the maintenance or replacement of products lost or contaminated as a result of corrosion reactions.

The economic importance of an ore deposit itself is largely affected by mineral or metal prices. Mine closures and reopenings are a common event in the mineral iadustry for this reason. Economics can also be affected by the ore composition, for example, by unacceptable levels of penalty elements ia the ore. The assessment of overall economics of exploiting a given ore deposit is similar to that for any large-scale industry. The various cost components are those associated with equipment, labor, utiUties, contingencies, operation and production, transportation, working capital, suppHes, maintenance. 

Uralkyds have superior adhesion, hardness, abrasion resistance, durabiHty, and chemical resistance to the unmodified alkyds. They find appHcations in wood floor finishes, marine coatings, metal primers, and maintenance paints. 

Acid Coolers. Cast Hon trombone coolers, once the industry standard (101), are considered obsolete. In 1970, anodically passivated stainless steel sheU and tube acid coolers became commercially available. Because these proved to have significant maintenance savings and other advantages, this type of cooler became widely used. Anodic passivation uses an impressed voltage from an external electrical power source to reduce metal corrosion. 

Steam-tube dryers are suitable for any particulate material that can be conditioned so as not to stick to metal when dry. Because of relatively iaexpensive heating surface and large capacities, these dryers are probably the most commonly used of the iadirect-heat dryers. Gas- and vapor-tight seals sometimes are built for operations involving dangerous vapors and iaert gas circulation, but these seals are expensive and high maintenance. Small iastaHations excepted, stationary vessels are preferable. 

Maintenance shops—electric, piping, sheet metal, machine, welding. Raw-material and finished-product handling equipment—elevators, hoists. 

Metal finishes are more durable, require less maintenance, reduce heat loss, and, if uncoated, increase the surface temperature on hot systems. 

Maintenance The only moving parts in spiral concentrators are those in the pumps that supply the feed and recirculate intermediate products. However, there are sometimes minor maintenance problems associated with the spiral trough itself. Some ores contain sharp particles of veiy abrasive minerals. The presence of these minerals in some ore causes rapid formation of deep grooves in the surface of cast-iron spirals. Wear grooves can be patched with a variety of plastic and metallic cements. Most spirals presently in service are made of cast iron with molded and vulcanized liners. These liners have successfully solved most wear problems.
