The residence time is very low, less than 1 month [36], and it can even attain 5 days during high flows [38]. The trophic state of the reservoir can change from year to year, from mesotrophic conditions [36, 40] to eutrophic ones [38, 39]. [Pg.87]

Sampling. Water and sediments were sampled at the greatest depths of two mountain mesotrophic lakes in Nagano Prefecture, Lakes Kizaki-ko and Nakatsuna-ko. Sampling of the core sediments was made by using a core sampler devised by the author. [Pg.50]

Sample Collection. Pelagic lake-water samples were collected at Crystal Lake, an engineered mesotrophic lake in Champaign County, Illinois. It has an average depth of 10 feet with a maximum depth of 13 feet and is fed by ground-water from a 200-foot-deep well. For each sample 250-500 L of water was filtered with a plankton net and stored in 55-L polyethylene (Nalgene) containers until processed in the laboratory approximately 30 min later. [Pg.174]

In the development of the populations of planktonic and bottom algae one can trace the seasonal dynamics of the phytocoenosis represented by the alternation of the dominating species and by the changes in their abundance and biomass. In the years different with respect to the climatic conditions, the species composition as well as the dynamics of the abundance and production of algae strongly varies. With respect to the level of the primary production, the Black Sea ecosystem may be referred to as a mesotrophic-type of marine basin. In mesotrophic waters, the phytoplankton consumption by zooplankton, which represents an important food object for fish with short lifecycles, proceeds more intensively than in oligotrophic waters. The coefficient of matter transfer from the primary production to the higher trophic levels is about... [Pg.370]

Ratter and coworkers placed due emphasis on the influence of high calcium levels in the soil on the cerrado vegetation when they concluded that the floristic composition and phytosociological parameters of cerradoes and cerrados on more fertile soils can be quite different from those on dystrophic soils (Ratter 1971, 1992, Ratter et al. 1977, 1978). Many species occur only on dystrophic soils, others only on mesotrophic soils. Even when species indifferent to soil fertility occur in different communities their relative importance can vary to a great extent (Araujo and Haridasan 1988). Nutritional adaptations of such species and communities have received very little attention for any useful discussion at a community or ecosystem level (Haridasan 1992). [Pg.72]
